    Student Health and Wellness at UC Santa Cruz is seeking to fill the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services position. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Health and Wellness (SHW) and leads a dynamic team of licensed staff and clinical trainees who respond to the diverse mental health needs of our campus community.     DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

    UCSC Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. We welcome staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities. The CAPS Director is supported by a leadership team that includes a Senior Associate Director, Associate Directors, and Coordinators. The professional counseling staff is a combination of licensed Psychologists and Psychotherapists with positions focused on specializations such as Multicultural; Graduate; African, Black Caribbean; Latinx, Chicanx, Immigrant; Trauma, Mobile Crisis and Generalist focus. A total of 22 professional staff, 4 of whom are clinical managers make up our team. Additional counseling services are provided by a team of 4 Clinical Trainees and 3 Doctoral Interns from our American Psychological System (APA) accredited internship program. The CAPS Front Office is managed by an Administrative Supervisor who manages a team of 3 reception staff.

    UC Santa Cruz Student Health and Wellness (SHW) strives to create a caring and supportive environment to assist students in improving their physical and emotional well-being to aid in their academic success. We are a full-service medical facility offering clinical, educational, and psychological services to diverse students on the UC Santa Cruz campus. We are deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities, through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services. Comprising a variety of Clinical Services, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Laboratory, and X-ray, SHW also has an onsite retail pharmacy, offering both prescriptive pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter products. Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP); CARE (Campus Advocacy, Resources, and Education) the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.     The Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS), consists of nearly 250 team members spanning 21 departments and 3 major units, each led by an associate vice chancellor. We also do our work through a range of resource centers dedicated to providing direct student support. Our work is grounded in educational equity, institutional responsibility, and an unfettered commitment to supporting the whole student.     JOB SUMMARY

    The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services is a transformational leader who cultivates and curates services and programs that center equity. Reporting directly to the AVC for Student Health and Wellness (SHW) and chief well-being officer, the Director is responsible for the administration, planning, and evaluation of campus counseling services, including training and supervision of the professional and administrative staff. It is the responsibility of the Director to establish and maintain programs that provide high-quality counseling and psychological services, including consultation and treatment, crisis intervention, prevention and outreach and community consultation for the full range of psychosocial and psychiatric problems ranging from developmental difficulties to acute psychotic disorders.

    In the setting of unprecedented demand for college mental health services across the country, the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will join UCSC Health and Wellness at a time of great excitement, opportunity and challenge as the team continues to hone an integrated mental health model designed to best meet the needs of students today and tomorrow. With an emphasis on access, meeting students where they are and with a population/public health approach, the Director of CAPS will lead a large, multi-disciplinary and dedicated team through this advancement, contributing to the vision and providing strong leadership.

    The Director will provide direct leadership and programmatic oversight for all administration, budgets, services and staff within CAPS. The position plays a key role in strengthening linkages between CAPS, other departments in Student Affairs and Success and the larger campus community through the coordination of services and activities in support of holistic mental health of UCSC students. The Director of CAPS interfaces with senior administration and faculty and collaborates and liaises with other internal and external partners including students, student groups, parents, university departments and community agencies as a way to bridge the various dimensions of mental health inside and outside of the classroom. The Director of CAPS also plays a pivotal role in ensuring critical incident follow-up for students and parents. Through a mature and supportive approach, the individual engenders trust, fosters a collegial environment and brings out the best in students and colleagues. The Director of CAPS must have an acute awareness of the importance of culture, race, gender identity, religion and disability status and how they and other dimensions of diversity intersect to impact mental health. They will rely on their own cultural humility and work closely with the CAPS staff to ensure support for an increasingly diverse student population.
