Psychiatrist evaluates, diagnoses and treats patients with mental illnesses through a combination of personal counseling (psychotherapy), psychoanalysis, hospitalization, and/or medication. Performs initial psychiatric assessments, develops individualized care plans, and implements treatment for the patient. Being a Psychiatrist prescribes psychopharmacological medications as needed. Monitors and records client progress, and amends treatment plan according to patient response. Additionally, Psychiatrist requires a MD degree. Must have completed a psychiatry residency. Typically reports to a medical director. Typically requires board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Requires a state license to practice.     The Department of Corrections is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the fulltime, permanent position of Psychiatrist 4 for the Washington Corrections Center for Women (WCCW) located in Gig Harbor, WA.    This position is about 2 days remote to cover other facilities as needed and 3 days at WCCW.  The Psychiatrist will need to visit the remote site(s) once every quarter to see patients and complete medical records.  The Psychiatrist will be required to live in WA state.


     The Department has several options for providing mental health care to those who require treatment. All major institutions can provide temporary or short-term in-patient psychiatric care for crisis management and stabilization.     Provide direct patient psychiatric services via telepsychiatry and quarterly site visits at locations where the psychiatrist has on-going caseload and onsite at WCCW. 

    • Manage assigned caseload. 
    • Provide Clinical Oversight to psychiatric prescribers, as assigned. 
    • Complete Clinical performance reviews for assigned clinical supervisees. 
    • Ensure deliver of quality psychiatric services for assigned patients. 
    • Conduct psychiatric assessments. 
    • Schedule routine follow-ups to monitor efficacy of treatment strategy. Those on psychotropic medications should be seen no less frequently than every three months. 
    • Provide consult services beyond assigned caseload as requested through designated processes. 
    • Diagnose psychiatric conditions. 
    • Prescribe and monitor psychotropic medications according to a treatment plan. 
    • Respond to psychiatric emergencies when possible, using telepsychiatry when offsite and in person when onsite. 
    • Facilitate emergency responses through consultation with local facility staff. 
    • Coordinate care with other health care providers, including development of emergency response plans.
    • Ensure all provision is in accordance with regulatory standards and all DOC policies and procedures to include Washington DOC Health Plan and DOC Pharmaceutical Management and Formulary Manual. 
    • Be consistent and punctual in meeting appointment commitments.

     

    Meet all documented requirements in a timely manner 

    • Provide proper documentation in the patient medical record. 
    • Ensure all charting is appropriately completed and when necessary, scanned and emailed or faxed to the facility in a timely manner. Chart entries are expected to be in the record the day a service is rendered except in unusual circumstances. 
    • Produce timely, clearly written reports and progress notes. 
    • Ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled and meet statewide expectations. Research and respond to kites concerning psychiatric symptoms in a timely manner not to exceed one working week – make an appointment or write a response as appropriate. 
    • Ensure encounters are entered into the computer system immediately upon completion of appointments. 
    • Request and review necessary records. 

     

     

    Oversight of assigned patient caseload for medication compliance, efficacy, and safety 

    • Ensure that medications orders do not expire. 
    • Monitor and respond to laboratory and other test results. 
    • Research and respond to kite concerns about medication reactions on renewal within one working day of receipt. Responses may be scanned and emailed or faxed to the facility for distribution. 
    • Provide timely follow-up to Nursing, Psychology, Pharmacy, and Primary Medical Provider concerns – not to exceed one working week. 
    • Analyze pharmacy and nursing reports concerning no-shows and determine appropriate course of action, in accordance with statewide directives.

      

    Be a contributing and supportive team member of the Mental Health team and the total Health Services team 

    • Consistent and punctual attendance. 
    • Respectful communication. 
    • Provide outstanding customer service. 
    • Manage email and ensure timely response, as required. 
    • Respond in a timely manner to requests for assistance, consultation, or information. 
    • Attend team and Health Services meetings and staff meetings. 
    • Support quality performance of others. 
    • Seek feedback and give others constructive feedback. 
    • Share knowledge and information and encourage others. 
    • Support and suggest innovative ideas and strategies. 
    • Foster teamwork. 
    • Practice fiscal responsibility. 
    • Participate in Health Services coordinated Quality Improvement Programs activities, as appropriate. 
    • Participate in formal clinical oversight according to the DOC Health Services clinical oversight structure. 
    • Provide information to HSMs or respond directly to level one grievances associated with psychiatric services.

     

    Other duties as assigned 

    • Promote safety. 
    • Be an active participant, be aware, be alert, act safely and make recommendations. 
    • Attend all required training. 
    • Keep abreast of new methods, techniques, and other developments in the field, through reading research journals, attending seminars, professional affiliations, etc. 
    • Remain up to date concerning specific workflow expectations. 
    • Coordinate with all administrations and IT to ensure computer and electronic equipment is in compliance with DOC requirements.  

    Required Qualifications:
     

    • Must be Board Eligible/Certified with a current, valid license to practice medicine and surgery in the State of Washington and eligibility for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. 
    • Possess or meet eligible criteria for DEA. 
    • Possess strong interpersonal skills and experience in directing medical operations. 
    • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of individuals ranging from correctional administrator and staff health care professionals to patient advocates and other lay persons. 
    • Initial and continuous unblemished/unrestricted licensure in State of Washington as a Psychiatrist with prescriptive authority. 
    • Must have strong computer skills and be able, among other things, to enter schedule, monitor and track patient information, place medication orders and communicate via email. 

    Desired/Preferred Qualifications:

     

    • At least one year working as a Psychiatrist. 
    • Experience in Correctional Psychiatry.
