Director, Provider Compensation and Contracting

  • Summary Working under the direction of the CHMG Chief Administrative Officer and in close collaboration with the Vice President of Finance, the Director will be responsible for oversight of the provider compensation and contracting functions. This role will provide administration of the finance and legal functions related to provider compensation and contracting, ensure strong financial controls and compliance, and support Concord Hospital in meeting its financial and strategic objectives. Experience and a knowledge of provider compensation and agreements, including, but not limited to, employment agreements, independent contract agreements, professional service agreements, and all other internal and external arrangements between the medical group, health system, facility and providers is necessary including a strong understanding of the healthcare environment. Education Bachelor’s degree is required preferably in business administration, healthcare administration, accounting, finance or similar field. Master’s degree preferred. Certification, Registration & Licensure None required. Experience A minimum of 5 years experience in leadership, medical group operations including revenue cycle and budgeting/financial management, physician compensation planning, benchmarking, and contracting. Responsibilities Provider Compensation Management Manages the provider compensation process including developing, implementing, and maintaining all provider compensation plans, policies, and related documents. Works closely with executive leaders, leading strategic compensation plan design and implementation of revised/new programs and best practices. Makes appropriate recommendations based on enterprise goals and strategies and ensures changes adhere to established approval processes. With innovative thinking, manages the physician production reporting system. This will require continual monitoring of industry trends in provider compensation and continual reassessment of the balance between productivity, quality, patient satisfaction, and physician market value in the growing prevalence of pay for performance reimbursement programs. Reviews and approves all provider compensation for new hires and contracted providers to ensure compliance with fair market value commercial reasonableness guidelines and regulations. Ensure external valuation every three years or upon major changes in the compensation plan. Provide oversight for complete and accurate physician compensation calculations and payments for fixed and variable compensation. Ensures all compensation requirements are met per the agreement and the needed documentation related to payment is contractually accurate. Responsible for preparing and submitting compensation survey data to national benchmarking organizations. Provides training, communications, and consultation services regarding compensation, best practices and market competitive data to ensure overall understanding and support of approved plans. Maintains knowledge of current trends and best practices in provider compensation and contracting. Reviews and audits payroll and compensation audit reports to ensure accurate administration of provider compensation in the HR and payroll system. Contract Management Develop and maintain all provider, professional service, and contractor agreements. Perform routine contract language review and analysis with the assistance of legal resources, human resources, and recruitment, and identifies issues and recommend solution to executive leadership. Suggest solutions and references past contracts that could be used for other scenarios throughout the organization. Maintains employed and contracted provider position control system ensuring proper tracking of open positions and employed/contracted provider data within all systems. Business Development With the Director of Provider Professional Services develop and maintain a provider manpower plan to support the Enterprise’s vision, mission and strategies. In conjunction with the administrative directors and finance, assist in the development of the provider compensation operating budgets for the medical group. Ensure provider compensation and related volumes are calculated correctly. Directs and assists in the preparation of pro formas and other analysis regarding position changes, additions, deletions, start-up practices, potential practice acquisitions, efficiency and performance improvement initiatives, and other opportunities to improve the financial performance of the physician group. Compiles backup materials, prepare report/presentation and makes recommendations to executive leadership. Oversee and work collaboratively with internal analysts and internal/external consultants to perform compensation and other financial operations analytics. Ensures responsible usage of financial and reporting analyst resources in support of executive leadership approved efforts. Ensures that analytics and deliverables are appropriate, accurate and meet the needs of stakeholders. Other duties as assigned. Other Skills Ability to understand complex structures, data and changes in provider compensation and healthcare organization finance. Thorough knowledge of provider contracting and benchmarking, professional service revenue cycle, including CPT codes and related modifiers, charging, billing, cash posting methodologies, as well as understanding of general accounting principles. Strong communication, interpersonal, team and organizational skills. Ability to establish strong, effective working relationships with medical group leadership, Medical Staff Services, Recruitment, Human Resources and Finance. Will work hand-in-hand with Recruitment Team to provide documentation and compensation as needed. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
