Property Casualty Underwriting Manager manages and oversees the property/casualty insurance underwriting program for individuals and/or groups, such as accident insurance, crime insurance, loss of property insurance etc. Implements guidelines and procedures regarding risk exposure, application renewal, acceptance, modification, and denial. Leads and trains the underwriters to ensure integrity of property and casualty underwriting activities and processes. Being a Property Casualty Underwriting Manager experienced in risk management and complex applications. Provides consultative support for large accounts. Additionally, Property Casualty Underwriting Manager requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires certification as a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Property Casualty Underwriting Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions.      Managing commercial first-party property claim associates 
    • Work with upper management to adjust claims handling procedures as needed. 
    • Ensuring legal compliance of the claims process.
    • Building and motivating the team.
    • Collaborating with cross-functional teams. 
    • Handling of higher value claims directly.
     
    Responsibilities 
    • Hire, train, and manage a team of claim associates. 
    • Analyze all claims, identify all risks, and ensure processing of all claims per company policy.
    • Review, approve, and assign claims according to the team member’s skill levels and abilities. 
    • Assist with the review and approval of all coverage decisions. Work with internal coverage resources to ensure an appropriate response. 
    • Provide guidance and support to team members, ensuring they have the necessary resources and knowledge to process claims efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. 
    • Schedule and conduct internal claim file audits. Where needed, provide appropriate feedback and training to the individual file handler and report audit outcomes to upper management. 
    • Manage associates, including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions. 
    • Develop a system to share feedback with cross-functional leadership and make recommendations to improve educational opportunities and/or policy revisions. 
    • Participate in updating all policies and procedures for commercial first-party claims.
    • Identify and investigate suspicious or potentially fraudulent claims. Assess situations, gather relevant information, and work with the company’s SIU vendor to take all appropriate action. 
     
    Necessary Skills and Qualifications 
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
    • At least 5 years experience managing commercial first-party property claims.
    • At least 3 years experience as an insurance claim manager. 
    • Active adjuster license in all required states (or ability to acquire in the first ninety (90) days).
    • Ability to lead and motivate others to achieve expected results.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
    • Capable of professionally communicating with both internal and external customers. 
    • Willingness to be heavily involved in claim files and provide consistent and ongoing meaningful direction to direct reports. 
    • Ability to be objective and professional when involved in conflict resolution.
    • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet assigned goals, objectives, and deadlines. 
    • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
