A Brief Overview

All tasks are performed as part of a learning process and will involve a high degree of supervision and direction. Incumbent is to focus on learning and becoming conversant with the various aspects of Property & Casualty insurance (including policy input, rating, underwriting, and communicating Zenith underwriting philosophy for Farm, Auto, Liability and umbrella primary lines of business).

What you will do

Under the direct supervision of technical team lead and underwriting management, learn essential functions of an underwriter including:

• Underwrite assigned book of business. Accept, reject and/or negotiate new business, renewals, and mid-term changes within company appetite, guidelines, and rules.
• Work independently within assigned, but restrictive, Letter of Authority and consistently refer risks outside of authority to appropriate referral underwriter or AVP.
• Collaborate with team members on any unusual or complex exposures, problems, or issues.
• Communicate underwriting decisions to stakeholders in a timely and professional manner, with adherence to department of insurance rules.
• Communicate instruction to support personnel including Assistant underwriters, accounting and others as needed.
• Learn customer facing skills.
• Develop agency relationships through proactive agency calls, meetings and point of sale or risk management meetings.
• Document underwriting thought process and actions consistently.
• Secure facultative reinsurance when required by company guidelines.
• May manage an assigned book of business, or act as a back-up for other underwriters.
• Will perform support tasks to assist underwriters as needed.
• Overnight travel may be required.
• Work productively and harmoniously with others on a consistent basis.
• Respond positively to direction and feedback on performance.
• Consistently maintain professional and appropriate demeanor.
• Perform other duties/projects as assigned.

Education Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.

Skills and Abilities

• Strong verbal and written communication skills required.
• Strong math and reading skills required.
• Computer literacy required.
• Previous insurance experience helpful.
• Valid Driver License in good standing.
• Overnight Travel required.

The expected salary range for this position is $57,964.25 - $72,455.31. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law. Qualifications may warrant placement in a different job level.
