Position Description:
The FHWA Construction Project Engineer (CPE) is responsible for performing project engineering, construction inspection, and construction management in support of Western Federal Lands Highway Division (WFLHD) administered bridge and highway projects. In the performance of day-to-day job duties, this position reports directly to an FHWA Project Engineer. Candidates should anticipate performing most of their duties in the field, using project vehicles as field offices, on rural project sites with at times limited phone and internet service. Project sites include bridges, culverts, roadways, or recreational facilities located within National Forests, National Parks, and at other Federal, State, or County owned facilities outside of urban areas. Ideal candidate will have experience in highway reconstruction and 10,000 ton asphalt paving projects.
Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to: approval/rejection of material and workmanship; monitoring labor and safety provisions; maintaining project logs and files; developing records of defects, reviewing of Construction Contractor’s submittals, reviewing/approving Construction Contractor’s pay notes, review/approve project submittals and shop drawings, monitor the construction schedule, assist in the administration of construction contract modifications, coordination with the Construction Contractor and FHWA, and preparation of other construction contract administration and inspection documentation.
