    SETTING

    Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. The University is affiliated with The United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the United Negro University Fund (The University Fund). Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded, as well as master's programs in education and business administration. Huston-Tillotson University is multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and multi-faith, and welcomes students of all ages, races, and religions. While faculty are engaged in a range of activities, their primary focus is teaching. The average student-teacher ratio is 15 to 1, which allows an environment of personalized attention to students.


    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Huston-Tillotson University and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences invites applications from a diverse group of qualified applicants for a nine month, full-time, tenure track position of Associate/Assistant Professor level in Sociology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses that support the Sociology curriculum, working effectively with the Social and Behavioral Sciences faculty and staff, and other pertinent responsibilities. Teaching assignments may include the following content areas: Introduction lo Sociology, Social Problems, Conflict Resolution, Human Sexuality, Minority Group Relations, Interventive Methods of Social Work, Research Methodology and Social Science Statistics and supervise students in their Field Placement and Senior Seminar A background in Social Work is preferred. Previous academic experience with diverse populations is highly desirable.

    At Huston-Tillotson University, teaching is the central criterion for faculty evaluation. The typical teaching load is 4 courses per semester. The prospective candidate is expected to engage in research and scholarship; as well as demonstrate evidence of potential to obtain external funding for research and/or professional development. Other responsibilities include academic advising, student recruitment and retention, assistance with curriculum development and alignment with accreditation standards, university, and community service. Specific teaching responsibilities include to prepare for teaching assignments and present class material which is current, challenging and thought provoking; possess both a theoretical and practical knowledge of current trends and issues in the field/profession; prepare comprehensive syllabi and outlines for each course taught; maintain at least 10 office hours each week; advise and mentor Sociology students; attend regularly scheduled and special faculty meetings; serve on standing committees and perform related duties as requested by the Social and Behavioral Sciences Chair, Dean of the academic unit, the Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs, or the President.

    Qualifications


    We seek candidates with an earned doctorate in Sociology. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate teaching excellence in undergraduate classes; experience using a variety of instructional strategies, such as face-to-face delivery, online, hybrid, experiential learning, or field-based experiences to engage students with diverse needs and experiences; with teaching certification and/or licensures in Social Work; effective communication and interpersonal skills; sensitivity to academic and cultural diversity; demonstrated record of leadership for curriculum development; a record of research and/or grant acquisition; and a commitment to the mission and vision of the University.
