    The School of Computer, Data & Information Sciences (CDIS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is in the midst of a multi-year effort to build excellence in computing and data ethics across its three constituent departments of Computer Sciences, the Information School, and Statistics. This position will be an academic nine-month, tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2024. The tenure home will be one of the above three departments, and it will be determined at the time of hire based on the selected candidate's qualifications and interests.     Topics of specific interest include: issues of algorithmic fairness, accountability, and transparency, safety, privacy, surveillance, content moderation, platform governance, trust, misinformation, issues of transparency in data collection and processing, reproducibility of analyses, and replicability of experiments (all broadly construed).

    Applicants should demonstrate an interest in and ability to do collaborative, cross-disciplinary work that cuts across the boundaries of the three departments and attracts funding support. The successful candidate will contribute to an inclusive, fair, and equitable environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

    Responsibilities:

    Faculty responsibilities include research and publication, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, student advising (both master's and PhD), and service. The successful candidate will conduct scholarly research resulting in publications in high-quality peer-reviewed scholarly venues, acquire external funding to support research and graduate students, and design and teach bachelor's, master's, and doctoral level courses (both online and in person). The candidate will be committed to service within the department, university, and profession appropriate to faculty rank. The successful candidate, as a member of the College of L&S, will proactively contribute to, support, and advance the college's commitment to diversity among all aspects of their teaching, research, and service.     The Department of Computer Sciences (CS) is among the oldest and top-ranked computer science departments in the world, renowned for its research in several areas. CS fosters transformative research and building large-scale computing infrastructures, such as HTCondor and CloudLab, and of new interdisciplinary collaborations, programs, and centers, including the Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery (WID). The Information School (iSchool) has been home to research and teaching that elevates questions of public good, people, and community in relation to computing, data and information for over 100 years. It is in a period of growth, more than doubling its faculty and enrollments over the past five years. It hosts the new Information Science major as well as two professional masters programs and a PhD degree. The Department of Statistics has 30 regular faculty members, more than 100 PhD students, about 150 MS students, and over 1200 undergraduate majors in statistics and data science. The department is well known for its strong interplay between statistical theory, methodology, and practice. Some faculty members have joint appointments in other departments.
