Dentistry Program Director -Pediatric Dentistry

  • Job Summary

    The Denver Health department of Dentistry is recruiting for a Pediatric Dental Director to oversee our Pediatric Dentistry division and Pediatric Dental Residency. Under minimal supervision, provide primary and comprehensive preventative and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. Diagnose, prevent, and treat problems with teeth or mouth tissue. Perform extractions, preventative and restorative dental work on pediatric and special needs patients. Provide instruction on brushing, flossing, the use of fluorides, and other aspects of dental care. Administer anesthetics and write prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications.

    Responsible for the ongoing administration, development, implementation, growth, oversight of pediatric dental services in the outpatient facilities, operating room, pediatric dental residency, and school-based programs. This includes recruitment, faculty development and clinical oversight. Provide primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.

    The Pediatric Dentistry Program Director is operationally responsible for all clinics and work environments offering pediatric oral health services. The Program Director will also be responsible for attaining and sustaining program accreditation in compliance with American Dental Association Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA).

    Clinical Responsibilities

    1. Performs professional dental care on infants and children through adolescents, including those with special health care needs, which includes examination of patient’s oral cavity, analyzing results of radiographs and other diagnostic procedures.

    2. Prepares charts and determines that most appropriate plan for treatment.

    3. Maintains charts and treatment plans and completes required reports.

    4. Administer anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patient during procedure.

    5. Prepares and restores carious teeth with appropriate dental material.

    6. Performs pulp treatment as indicated, including pulp capping and removal of pulp chamber remnants.

    7. Extracts erupted, impacted, infected, otherwise diseased teeth and, as indicated, for guidance and development of the dentition.

    8. Provides orthodontic treatment and space maintenance.

    9. Utilizes non-pharmacological behavior management, inhalation analgesia, conscious sedation and treatment in the operating room.

    10. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

    11. Educates patients and parents regarding preventative dentistry and oral hygiene.

    12. Serves as the primary advocate for the oral health of children.

    13. Treats diseases of the oral cavity with appropriate medication.

    14. Authorizes the manufacture of dental prosthetics by dental laboratories.

    15. Write prescriptions for antibiotics and other medications.

    16. Engages in professional growth, development and Scholarly activity through participations in Departmental Seminars, educational programs, receiving current literature, and attending meetings, conferences, and workshops.

    17. Completes all counts with 100% accuracy.

    18. Supervises and manages dental staff when appropriate.

    19. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Operational Responsibilities

    1.Responsible for program administration.

    2.Development, implementation, and sustainment of the curriculum plan

    3.Ensure the program curriculum and experiences are compliant with CODA policies and standards for an advanced dental education program in pediatric dentistry.

    4.Ongoing evaluation of program goals, objectives and outcome assessment.

    5.Develop and maintain resident handbook.

    6.Schedule and oversight of all clinical and didactic activities.

    7.Distribute resident evaluations of above items to ensure ongoing improvement of the program.

    8.Compile results from resident evaluations of above items to facilitate ongoing improvement of the program.

    9.Distribute and compile results of faculty and auxiliary staff evaluations of residents and review with residents at least biannually.

    10.Compile and review Program Director evaluations of faculty.

    11.Direct pediatric dental related hospital activities.

    12.Manage intern and resident onboarding schedule and orientation.

    13.Review program applications for intern and resident positions at DHHA and invite selected applicants to visit DHHA following policies and procedures of the residency program and institution.

    14.Coordinate and manage applicant interviews with subsequent determination of applicant rank list.

    15.Supervise maintenance of resident clinical log in compliance with CODA guidelines.

    16.Manage and schedule off-service rotations in pediatric medicine, anesthesia, multi-disciplinary clinics, emergency department and dental specialties.

    17.Solicit and schedule speakers to serve the educational goals of the pediatric dentistry program.

    18.Serve on appropriate DHHA committees.

    19.Review and coordinate annual budget for pediatric dentistry programs.

    20.Review clinical pediatric dental metrics on a monthly basis.

    21.Schedule and facilitate monthly faculty meetings and conduct an annual Program Director review of faculty.

    22.Coordinate schedules of adjunct faculty teaching activities and clinical supervision.

    23.Participation with institutional leadership in planning for and operation of facilities.

    24.Oversight of continuity and quality of patient care.

    25.Oversight of resident research projects.

    26.Determining the roles and responsibilities of associate and assistant program director(s) and their regular evaluation.

    27.Participation in ongoing QI, accreditation and other operational projects.

    Additional Duties and Responsibilities:

    1.Leadership role/decision-making in departmental staff oversight and management of the administrative, professional, clinical, financial and educational activities of the pediatric dental department.

    2.Supervision of clinic team members.

    3.Lead and participate in initiatives focused on improving pediatric dental patient experience, patient safety clinical outcomes, enhancing systems to ensure timeliness and efficiency, and assuring quality while maintaining fiscal responsibility.

    4.Promotions and oversight of the development of pediatric dental protocols and practice guidelines.

    5.Ensure that appropriate quality improvement standards/metrics are established, maintained, and reported.

    6.Ensure the application of best practices, incorporating regulatory requirements at the local, state and national levels.

    7.Continued development of pediatric dental providers personalized performance review plans.

    8.Promotion and support of relevant education for pediatric dentistry team members. Development and oversight of continuing education programs.

    9.Ensure that pediatric dental providers meet performance expectations of their service assignments and customer service standards.

    10.Clinical activities including providing primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs.

    11.Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality improvement, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

    12.Promotes positive interpersonal (customer) relationships with fellow interns and residents, faculty, employees, physicians, patients and visitors. Treats these individuals with courtesy, dignity, empathy and respect; consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications.

    13.Adheres to, complies with and demonstrates support for the mission and values of Denver Health. Supports and adheres to the Denver Health Dozen.
