    Job Description Summary

    The Department of Computer Science in the College of Computing at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor. Applicants with the required education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and accomplishments commensurate with a higher rank will also be considered for an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. Two positions are available. We encourage applicants in all research areas of computer science, especially those with expertise in systems, software engineering, data science and cybersecurity. Successful candidates will demonstrate a passion for their research, an enthusiasm for undergraduate and graduate education, and a strong commitment to cultivating diverse and inclusive environments. The anticipated start date is August 2024.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)

    Establish a successful and sustained research program, as evidenced by a respected publication record and securing external funding
    Advise graduate students
    Teach and develop undergraduate and graduate classes, and assist with curricular/program assessment, evaluation, and development
    Participate in service activities at the department, college, and University level, as well as the appropriate professional organizations and societies
    Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work
    Adhere to applicable safety protocols

    Required Education, Certifications, Licensures (minimum requirements)

    Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline

    Required Experience (minimum requirements)

    Successful applicants must have a record of scholarship in computer science or a closely related field.

    Desirable Education and/or Experience

    Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
    Experience teaching in an institution of higher education
    Experience designing a course at the university level
    Experience with proposal writing or development of externally funded grants
    Demonstrated familiarity with financial/funding resources and opportunities for the candidate's research program

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities (minimum requirements)

    Effective written and oral communication and presentation skills
    Ability to teach a variety of courses in a computer science, cybersecurity, data science, or software engineering undergraduate curriculum
    Ability to teach effectively at the graduate level
    Experience or demonstrated interest in conducting research with students (graduate and undergraduate students)
    Ability to independently lead a successful research program within a small department

    Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

    Ability to teach broadly across a core computer science curriculum
    Ability to conduct collaborative research across disciplines
    Experience teaching computing courses to diverse students
    Demonstrated success in, or potential future contributions to, working with persons from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of belonging, and fostering a fair, objective, welcoming place to work for persons with a wide variety of personal characteristics and viewpoints

    The CS department has 25 full-time faculty members, 595 undergraduate students in four bachelor's degree programs (Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science, Software Engineering), 120 graduate students in four master's degree programs (Applied Computer Science, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Data Science) and 32 students in one PhD program (Computer Science). The Department of Computer Science actively works to ensure that all faculty thrive and the university provides many opportunities for professional development and growth.

    The Department of Computer Science is housed in the College of Computing, which is the only academic college in Michigan focused on computing. The College is currently experiencing significant growth, with enrollments doubling over the last eight years. In addition to the programs in the Department of Computer Science, the College offers bachelor's programs in Computer Network & System Administration, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Mechatronics, and master's programs in Health Informatics and Mechatronics.
