Product Development Director plans and directs the resources and processes required to implement the vision and strategy for new product development and product lifecycle management of existing products. Establishes research and concept development projects and capabilities to innovate new products, product enhancements, and product redesign. Being a Product Development Director conducts market analysis and interacts with customers and prospects to identify new markets, articulate the value proposition, define requirements, and lead the development of a product roadmap. Oversees new product development and collaboration with internal stakeholders, including marketing, sales, and manufacturing, to ensure that new and existing products support the organization's financial goals. Additionally, Product Development Director develops teams with the knowledge and expertise to fulfill product development objectives. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Product Development Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Product Development Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Job Description:

    Location: Santa Fe, NM based. This position is remote/ hybrid-eligible, provided the candidate resides within the following markets: Santa Fe, Denver, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston, or Los Angeles.

    Compensation: Compensation for this position is $120k-$160k. This position is also eligible for a bonus of up to 12% of base salary. Bonuses are not guaranteed and depend on the successful achievement of pre-determined company and individual performance goals.

    Deadline: The original deadline for submitting applications for this position was March 13, 2024 and has been extended to April 5, 2024. Meow Wolf reserves the right to extend this deadline again if needed.

    The Director of Merchandising & Product Development is a multifaceted leadership position that requires a strategic thinker, creative problem solver, and collaborative team player with a deep understanding of merchandising principles, market trends, and consumer preferences. This role involves leading both people and product categories, ensuring the right product is delivered at the right place, time, price, and quantity. You are analytical but also creative, adept at recognizing market trends and blending the art and science of merchandising. You understand the metrics of SKU efficiency, how to manage and control, and how to maintain balanced product assortments across categories and locations. The ideal candidate brings an entrepreneurial mindset and is uniquely able to make informed business decisions, effectively manage resources, evolve processes, and identify priorities.

    The Director of Merchandising and Product Development plays a pivotal role in shaping the overall product strategy and developing best-in-class product assortments that captivate and delight our Meow Wolf fans while meeting financial objectives.

    How you will do it...

    • Lead and inspire the buying and product development team, fostering a collaborative and positive work environment.

    • Provide guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to team members.

    • Set clear goals and implement effective performance metrics by roles and categories.

    • Drive a consistent methodology for ongoing assessment of category product mix and SKU efficiency.

    • Regularly identify upward and downward trends to inform opportunities and develop key initiatives.

    • Uphold product quality standards to elevate and maintain brand integrity and reputation.

    • Drive informed product selection decisions based on a variety of inputs, including market research, sales analysis, and feedback from partners and consumers.

    • Evaluate the viability and priority of products considering brand value, feasibility, and return on investment of time and resources.

    • Manage product lifecycles to strategically determine products to continue and products to sunset.

    • Develop category plans and product briefs outlining direction, key needs, target pricing, and margins.

    • Ensure uniformity in product setup, classification, and naming conventions across categories.

    • Forge and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and brand collaborators, negotiating for fair and favorable terms.

    • Create cross-category product development calendars, continually monitoring to balance and prioritize.

    • Conduct regular meetings with stakeholders to update on progress, solicit feedback, and create accountability.

    • Provide product knowledge and visual assortment tools to support sales and marketing.

    • Produce product presentations for stakeholders, senior management, and other partners as needed.

    To be successful in this role...

    • Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated retail product merchandising and buying experience, including experience within high-traffic, location-based entertainment retail.

    • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in related fields.

    • Proven track record managing multi-location, multi-million dollar product categories and businesses.

    • Generalist expertise across all product categories with deep expertise in various categories.

    • Demonstrated ability to manage teams' direct and indirect reports.

    • Deep understanding of merchandising principles, market trends, consumer behavior, and competitive landscape.

    • Highly proficient with spreadsheet functions, MS Excel, and/or Google Sheets.

    • Clear capability to analyze, report, and communicate business results effectively.

    • Strong time management skills to effectively prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines.

    • Deep knowledge of merchandise design, development, and procurement processes.

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of developing and delivering presentations, articulating category strategies, and influencing stakeholders.

    • Adaptability to a fast-paced, ever-changing environment with multiple inputs - comfort with ambiguity.

    • Highly proficient with retail and inventory systems purchasing software.

    • Passion for bringing innovative consumer products to life.

    Work Environment & Physical Demands

    • This is a full-time position occasionally requiring flexibility to work during evenings or weekends and to travel to offsite locations, based on business needs.

    • This role requires supervision of staff within Merchandising & Product Development.
