    Job Description
    The Burton Blatt Institute (BBI) at Syracuse University seeks a Director of Research Administration to serve in a new leadership position supporting the important work of the Institute. The ideal candidate has excellent leadership, project management, writing, and interpersonal skills; attention to detail; the ability to effectively juggle multiple priorities and solve complex problems with discretion, good judgment, and a commitment to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
    The Director will collaborate with, and act as liaison among, multiple partners across the University including BBI project faculty and staff, budget & administrative staff, central offices, and other colleagues to: ensure complete and on-time submission of grant proposals, oversee fiscal administration of grants and contracts in concert with Office of Research budget staff and the Office of Sponsored Accounting, and anticipate and resolve administrative challenges that may arise throughout project lifecycles to ensure compliance and maximize efficiency in operations. Additionally, the Director collaborates with colleagues across the University to achieve best practices in proposal development and grants management.

    Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • Advanced degree in relevant field preferred.
    • Seven (7) plus years of experience in research or sponsored programs administration in an academic or similar environment required.
    • Budget or financial management experience required.
    • Grants management experience required.
    • Proposal development or grant-writing experience preferred.

    Job Specific Qualifications
    • Proven analytical and communication skills; the ability to comprehend and convey the financial status of multiple projects and programs.
    • Strong and proven administrative and software skills including proficiency in MS Office required, experience in PeopleSoft, Data Insights, or comparable systems preferred.
    • Exceptional ability to multi-task and juggle numerous priorities, all while interacting with stakeholders with a positive attitude.
    • Experience in a position in a fast paced, client driven environment with financial/accounting responsibilities.
    • Experience with basic accounting functions; journal entries, reconciliations of accounts, and the ability to research detailed data required.
    • Highly organized and able to work with a minimum of direction.
    • Strong commitment to the mission of BBI and serving BBI and University staff and clients.

    Responsibilities
    • In partnership with principal investigators, Office of Research budget staff, and Office of Sponsored Accounting staff, oversees fiscal administration and financial reporting of sponsored projects.
    • Oversees post-award fiscal activities such as invoicing, reconciliation, and travel/expense reimbursement.
    • Prepares monthly and quarterly internal reports; performs review and long-range forecasting to ensure effort distributions and expenditures are appropriate and on-schedule.
    • Monitors schedules for principal investigators for sponsor-required reporting, including interim progress reports and final reports, and assists in completing those reports as necessary.
    • Prepare, review, and submit documents necessary for BBI project continuations and for related vendor-subaward continuation amendments.
    • Facilitates proposal development (pre-award) processes to ensure complete and on-time submission of proposals for grants and contracts.
    • Uses independent professional judgement to set priorities, communicate requirements and expectations, and meet deadlines.
    • Works independently with faculty, staff, and the Office of Sponsored Programs.
    • Prepares application components and internal documentation.
    • Develops project budgets considering sponsor and University policies, including coordinating across schools and colleges and across institutions to support collaborative projects.
    • Navigates sponsor submission systems and guides Internal Routing & Review form data and approvals.
    • Serves as BBI¿s liaison with SU’s Offices of Sponsored Programs, Sponsored Accounting, Human Resources, Payroll, Research, Risk Management, and Institutional Effectiveness & Assessment.
    • In partnership with Office of Sponsored Programs, interprets sponsor guidelines and University policies for faculty and staff and maintains knowledge of existing laws, policies, and procedures necessary to comply with Federal, State, University, and sponsor regulations concerning grants and contracts.
    • Develops and prepares project- and program-specific financial reports.
    • Creates reports as necessary and in required formats for sponsors and specific audiences and participates in project-specific monthly and quarterly meetings.
    • Participates in BBI meetings and events.
    • Participates in professional development activities, including on-campus training, meetings and workshops with funders, professional conference participation, and participation in webinars/other online training mechanisms.
