Collects production data and applies standard scientific and statistical methods to analyze, document, and diagram production processes. Being a Process Engineer identifies process bottlenecks and devises solutions to resolve. Recommends changes or upgrades to equipment, work methods, or other aspects of the process to improve efficiency and utilization of resources including labor, energy and raw materials. Additionally, Process Engineer requires a bachelor's degree of engineering. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department.     Full Salary Range: Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $74,300 to $134,500/yr. The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $74,300 to $104,400/yr.

    The UCSB Nanofabrication Facility within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is a world class cleanroom consisting of class 100 and class 1000 cleanroom space. The 12000 sq. ft. facility supports a wide spectrum of disciplines with optics, electronics, materials, MEMS, and physics making up the majority of users. The 400 user cleanroom serves UCSB faculty, grad students, and researchers as well as a vast number of external companies, universities, and government institutions across the nation. The NanoFab is continually updating, installing, and qualifying new fabrication tools & processes to stay at the cutting edge of wafer fabrication techniques.

    Brief Summary of Job Duties:

    Under the supervision of a R&D3 Engineer, develops processes and establishes process control on a variety of nanofabrication research tools within the facility, including thin film deposition, inductively coupled plasma etching, and projection lithography. Works to establish and document standard procedures as well as new process modules for a variety of nanofabrication processes through direct hands-on processing and results documentation. Assigned work will support engineering staff, facility users, and facility projects.


    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
    • 1-3 years of experience with all aspects of cleanroom wafer processing.
    • Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges and barriers.
    • Possess good judgement, strong organizational abilities, and effective communication skills.

    Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

    75% Semiconductor process engineering - Under the general supervision of a senior process engineer, supports semiconductor fabrication needs of facility researchers and programs. This includes the following: Performing hands-on fabrication tasks within the facility involving advanced lithography, etching, deposition, bonding, polishing, etc. and various sequences of many of these steps. Develops new fabrication flows based on facility user and program needs for a variety of materials including silicon, GaAs, InP, and GaN based devices. Creates robust standard procedures for others to replicate the fabrication flows as needed. Designs experiments to establish centered, stable process steps and process flows for users and for general dissemination. Working closely with the senior process engineers and equipment engineers to increase the stability of fabrication systems. Performs measurement of outcomes using optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and other optical and electrical techniques.

    25% Processes Documentation - Under the general supervision of a senior process engineer, documents work performed for dissemination. This involves documentation of standard processes and process flows, creation of new standard fabrication procedures, reports on new processes developed, establishment and maintenance of statistical process control charts, and presenting results of various designs of experiment (DOEs). Publish documentation, as needed, on the UCSB Nanofabrication Facility wiki.
