POSITION OVERVIEW: The Seventeenth Judicial Circuit Public Defender Corporation (Mon Defender) – an innovative, progressive, holistic indigent defense office seeks a passionate social worker to join our staff.
We are a public defender non-profit that is radically transforming how low-income people in West Virginia are represented in the legal system, and, in doing so, is transforming the system itself. We seek thoughtful, creative, energetic individuals with a strong commitment to social justice to join our dynamic and diverse staff.
QUALIFICATIONS: LMSW, LCSW, or M.S.W.
PREFERRED: Passion for holistic public defense and racial justice; Knowledge of substance use disorder, domestic violence, parenting, and mental health and related systems; Knowledge of the criminal justice system
HOURS: Normal work hours Monday- Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; 37.50 hours per week, includes a one-hour unpaid lunch (hours can be flexed according to workload). Other hours as necessary to meet the needs of our clients.
BENEFITS: Health insurance, PTO (including Holidays, annual and sick leave), PERS (Public Employees Retirement System).
PAY: Salary of $40,000
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Collaborate with the people we represent, lawyers and other advocates on holistic defense teams to identify and achieve stated legal goals of our clients
· Inform the people we represent about the criminal court process and assist them in overcoming barriers while navigating the system
· Interview and assess the people we represent to identify strengths, resources, and needs
· Conduct supportive counseling, crisis intervention, and case management for the people we represent throughout the pendency of their legal cases
· Prepare persuasive written work product, including mitigation reports, for judges and prosecutors incorporating content from: psychosocial interviews of the people we represent, interviews with collateral sources, healthcare records, and social science research
· Engage in oral advocacy with judges, prosecutors, and other court and program staff
· Assist with review of behavioral, medical, education, and other records
· Prepare the people we represent for court-related assessments, interpret external assessments, and liaise with external behavioral health experts
· Visit the people we represent in jails, at court appearances, and at community-based programs
· Maintain case records in our case management system
· Cultivate relationships with community programs and social service providers
