Job Summary
Mainline is seeking an experienced VMware Systems Engineer (SE) to join the Open System Services group. This group is responsible for providing technical solutions for various Open Systems / x86 Server environments. The primary focus of this position is to deliver prescribed solutions based on industry leading technologies. The VMware Systems Engineer (SE) within the Open Systems group satisfies our customers' business and IT challenges. This is a billable role.
The SE must have strong technical and interpersonal skills. Relationship-building is a key component, as this is often a customer consultation and trusted advisor role. The SE is valued because of their ability to analyze a customers' business and IT challenges, and then implement a comprehensive solution that integrates smoothly into their environment, leveraging the appropriate products.
The VMware System Engineer (SE) role requires a well-rounded individual with a very solid technical background, as well as a proven history of successful interaction with customers. Strong communication skills, both oral and written, are required. Must have the ability to work in a collaborative manner with clients and internal architects, project managers, and other SEs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Professional certifications are an ongoing requirement. The candidate must have a current VCP-DVC/VCP-DTM/CCA/CCP/Azure Administrator and be willing to keep certifications up to date. Additional certifications may be required
- VMware vSphere installation, configuration, troubleshooting, day 2 operations, and capacity planning
- VMware Horizon Enterprise installation, configuration, troubleshooting, day 2 operations, and capacity planning
- Strong hands-on experience with problem determination and root cause analysis, capacity planning, and migration
- Strong experience with:
- VMware vSphere
- Windows Sever 2016-2022
- Windows Desktop OS (Windows 10 and 11)
- General security knowledge related to hardening endpoints and virtual desktops
- Active Directory, DNS, Group Policy Management
- File and Print services, DFS
- Proactive self-starter who can gather necessary requirements and complete tasks autonomously
- Ability to learn new concepts, technologies, and systems and apply that knowledge to existing concepts, systems, and technologies
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Act as lead engineer for a variety of client projects involving installation, configuration, migration, upgrade, or troubleshooting of x86 and open systems virtualization solutions
- Install and configure new VDI solutions including any supporting infrastructure as needed
- Upgrade existing VDI environments using the appropriate methodology to ensure minimal impact to existing systems
- Assist with the pre-sales design and post-sales delivery of VMware and VDI solutions and the adjacent systems involved
- Perform Health Checks, Capacity Planning and Performance Assessments as needed and provide customer guidance and insights regarding the information presented
- Gather the necessary customer requirements, objectives, and success criteria to ensure satisfactory project completion
- Provide written documentation including screen shots, installation, and configuration notes for customer deliverables

- Experience with Enterprise Virtualization (VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV)
- Experience with VDI Technologies (VMware Horizon, Citrix VAD, Azure Virtual Desktops)
- Experience with Scripting Solutions or Automation (PowerShell, Ansible)
Education and/or Experience
- BA or BS or equivalent required
- Candidates should possess a minimum of 5 years' experience managing and implementing VMware solutions
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
- Physical environmental factors of this position include those found in typical business office environment or home office environment.
- Requires use of general office equipment and personal computer equipment.
- Ability to travel. Various means of travel may be required, including auto and air travel. This position requires travel: Occasionally (25%)
- May be required to work irregular schedules including but not limited to as applicable: Nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and/or overtime.
