Job Summary
Works under close supervision to perform semi-skilled level operation and maintenance of equipment and machinery in central plant environment.
Work Location: Plant Operations, Dallas Campus
Work Schedule: 12-hour shifts for 3 days plus 4-hour shift for total of 40 work week; on-call required.
Skills Preferred: Candidates with previous experience as a Power Plant Operator in a Thermal Energy Plant. Prefer education in power plant technology and bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering; active CFC and/or EIT certification. Experience in electrical, plumbing, controls, and welding.
Skills Required: Knowledge in boiler operations and steam systems; knowledge in chiller operations, HVAC, and refrigeration; knowledge in cooling tower and pump operations and other industrial rotating equipment; water treatment; building automation systems and computer literacy.
Minimum Experience and Education Qualifications
- Requires graduation from high school, vocational school, or GED.
- Requires two (2) years semi-skilled level experience in operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical, or industrial equipment.
- Prefer vocational training in Power Plant Technology and/or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and/or electrical engineering preferred.
- Prefer completion of certified operator program and experience in university physical plant environment.
Job Duties
- Starts up, shuts down, and adjusts power plant and/or chilling station equipment or systems in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.
- Monitors equipment and maintains records of equipment operational status.
- Cleans and maintains equipment and work areas.
- Operates control computer systems.
- Performs detailed inspections of operating equipment for proper operation.
- Inform appropriate personnel of unusual conditions, problems, or deficiencies.
- Identifies and reports safety hazards and equipment malfunctions.
- Attends meetings and training courses.
- Trains new personnel as required.
- May perform preventative or corrective maintenance tasks incidental to operation of mechanical or electrical systems.
- May complete work orders using automated maintenance program systems.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Work requires good overall knowledge of tools of trade, standard office equipment and PC based automation control systems.
- Work may require working in manholes and tunnels, and/or extended shifts.
- Work requires walking, bending, climbing, lifting up to 50 lbs., pulling/pushing equipment up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in a general office environment.
- Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards typical to central plants, and utility distribution systems.
