Job Description and Duties
The Environmental Scientist will work under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor as an integral part of a small team of scientists and technicians implementing of the Department’s Coast Salmonid Monitoring Program for federally endangered southern California steelhead. This will include collection of population status and trend data on adult and juvenile steelhead, habitat condition, and watershed processes using freshwater fisheries techniques and protocols identified in Fish and Game Fish Bulletin 180 and 182. The Environmental Scientist will also coordinate monitoring and assessment activities with regional and Fisheries Branch personnel as well as National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and other partners; and represents the Department on committees, organizations, and coalitions involved in steelhead recovery.
The Environmental Scientist will act as a crew leader for 6 temporary personnel while conducting field data collection. The balance of the time will be spent in the office editing data, managing data bases, analyzing and summarizing data, writing reports and papers, and attending and participating in meetings, workshops, and conferences. Collaboration with agency and university scientists for special study design, review, data analyses, and report or paper preparation is an important aspect of this position.
The Environmental Scientist will occasionally assist Fisheries Restoration Grant Program by participating in reviewing and monitoring the appropriateness and effectiveness of granted projects to restore and recovery steelhead and their habitat and watershed function.
This position is a 12 month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.
If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions
This position may be located in the South Coast Region's Santa Barbara Field Office.
This position requires the incumbent to perform field work that may include walking in streams over slippery and uneven terrain; hiking in areas with moderate slopes, unpaved surfaces and undeveloped roads; to conduct field work for long hours under a variety of climatic conditions; operate vehicles on public and rural roadways and in remote areas; and travel throughout California to conduct field work and/or attend meetings, which may require overnight stays.
