Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. The St. Johnsbury Police Department serves a community of approximately 7,500 residents and a vast number of visitors within a 2 mile radius.

The Town of St. Johnsbury is currently accepting applications for the position of Sergeant with the St. Johnsbury Police Department. Applicants should have a strong work ethic, professional moral code, excellent communication, and ability to multi-task. A positive approach to community policing is key.

    This position is responsible for supervising and overseeing the activities of all police officers assigned to them and makes the first line of supervisory decisions. The Sergeant will assist with training, developing, evaluation and counseling of subordinate personnel. This position requires the applicant to be able to work a flexible schedule.

    Applicants must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, possess a valid Driver’s License and pass a background check, polygraph examination. The applicant will be VT level III certified or be able to obtain lateral transfer from another state that is eligible for a certification waiver with a minimum of 5 years of full time police experience. Prior supervisory experience is preferred.

    Full- time employment offers competitive compensation, a generous benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, short-term disability insurance, retirement and 457 plans, as well as 13 paid personal days, accrued vacation and sick time benefits. Pay incentives for additional duties to include Death Investigator, Field Training Officer, Use of Force Instructor and Fire Arms Instructor. Currently Officers work four 10 hour days with a rotating schedule of 3 days off.
