Job Duties
Norfolk State University’s Police Department is responsible for the safety and security of all members of the University community.
The Police Department provides for continuous services to secure and protect the lives of individuals and properties. As such, the Administrative Sergeant’s position is essential to enhancing our commitment and our partnerships, both equally on and off campus.
Incumbent is responsible for enforcing the laws of the Commonwealth, the rules and regulations of the University, and providing senior level management of initiatives related to the enforcement of university, municipal and state ordinances.
Reporting directly to, and under the direction of the Police Lieutenant, incumbent:
1. To direct and supervise independent patrols, inspections. and investigations, and manage the compilation and preservation of arrest and evidence materials and related reports.
2. Testifies In Judicial proceedings, develop, coordinate, and presents training and educational programs.
3. Plans, organizes, and directs law enforcement activities to achieve the department's goals and objectives.
4. Ensures compliance with the department's regulations; handles all Infractions and reports all violations to the superior officer (Lieutenant).
5. Instruct subordinates in the proper discharge of their duties, inclusive of their proficiency, discipline, conduct and appearance.
6. Responsible for the supervision of staff and training to meet department standards, prepares work schedules, and ensure that all officers are following policies and procedures.
7. Supervises, organizes, and coordinates joint law enforcement efforts with other law enforcement departments; coordinates and conducts special investigations.
8. Reviews and completes administrative reports, coordinates events/actlvities, and assists with budgeting.
Minimum Qualifications
1. The ability to use computers and monitor various alarm systems.
2. The ability to a operate/drive a motor vehicle with a valid operator license.
3. Ability to receive and prioritize complaints.
4. Skilled in keyboarding, have a good command of the English language and the ability to use good discretion and sound judgment when handling a situation.
5. Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
6. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience.
7. Considerable experience with using computers and possess clerical skills.
8. Must be able to pass the Department of Criminal Justice Basic Law Enforcement Course and In-Service courses. 9. Five concurrent years as a sworn law enforcement officer and possesses a current law enforcement certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

2. Any conviction of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, refusal to take blood or breath test, eluding police, racing, or reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accident within the last five (5) years.

1. Any involvement or use in the sale, distribution, or possession of illegal drugs.
2. Illegal possession of anabolic steroids within the last five (5) years.
3. Illegal possession of marijuana or a derivative thereof within the last twelve (12) months.
4. Illegal possession or use of heroin, cocaine, hallucinogens or any other schedule one (1) or two (2) drug, or any derivative thereof, as defined in the Code of Virginia within the last ten (10) years.
