Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required.     The City of Medford is excited to announce the opening of a Records Specialist position. Highlights of this position include:

    • Providing customer service and resources to citizens, employees, and other agencies both in person and by telephone.
    • Complex clerical and technical work involving extensive computer entry, retrieval and distribution of sensitive and confidential information.

    This position requires knowledge of clerical practices, procedures, and equipment, including word processing and database systems; basic understanding of civil and criminal laws; basic knowledge of practices, procedures and guidelines relative to police records and police terminology; ability to understand oral and written instructions and to act upon them accordingly, act effectively and calmly in emergency situations, work effectively with the public, other agencies, and other employees. The successful candidate must also possess strong customer service skills.

    A qualified applicant is one who:

    • Is a high school graduate or has a GED equivalent.
    • Has two (2) years of clerical work experience.

    Additional eligibility requirements:

    • Successful completion of pre-employment requirements including:
    • Comprehensive background investigation
    • Psychological examination
    • Clear drug screen (which includes testing for cannabis)
    • Ability to understand, interpret, and apply departmental policy and applicable state or municipal law.
    • Use of computer and other office equipment effectively and efficiently.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Ability to receive CJIS clearance and LEDs certification within 30 days of employment.

    Other information about the position:

    • Uniforms are provided.
    • Personal appearance standards must be in compliance with MPD policy 1043 including but not limited to:
    • No visible tattoos.
    • Hair color must be consistent with a naturally occurring color range.
    • Body piercing or alteration to any area of the body cannot be visible when in uniform, including but not limited to:
    • Tongue splitting or piercing.
    • Jewelry worn associated with body piercing, including nose piercing. A clear nose ring place holder may be worn.
    • Contact lenses of an unnatural color or graphic design.
    • Personal conduct and behavior (on-duty and off-duty) must be such that it builds confidence in the department.
    • The Records division operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Police Records Specialists will be assigned to work four 10-hour shifts during the day, swing, and graveyard shifts including weekends and holidays.
    • Shift assignments are based on seniority and operational need.
    • A requirement of this position is to rotate between day, swing and graveyard shifts.

    Potential Pay Differentials:

    • English/Spanish bilingual proficiency 4.5%
    • College credits up to 10% for a bachelor’s degree

    The anticipated hiring range for this position is $23.40 (first step) to $24.55 or $25.78 (second or third step). Directly related experience and qualifications will be evaluated alongside others who perform work of comparable character as required by Pay Equity Law. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.
