Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Police Sergeant typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. The written examination and physical fitness examination will be held on April 27, 2024. If both of those examinations are completed, police board and civil service interviews will be conducted on April 29, 2024. The certified applicant list for hiring will be posted at the conclusion of the interviews on March 4, 2024.

While at the academy, recruits are paid a full salary of a first year officer. Upon graduation from the academy, the new officers begin an 18-week Field Training Program. This program is designed to give them on the job training with an experienced police officer and allow them to work on various patrol shifts. After completing the Field Training Program, new officers are assigned to a patrol shift and evaluated throughout their 18-month probationary period.
Special Assignments
Officers also receive individual training opportunities to enhance job performance and develop specialized skills throughout their careers. After the probationary period, an officer has the opportunity to apply for a variety of specialized assignments, such as:
