Police Sergeant is responsible for supervising patrol officers and agents as assigned and maintaining the chain of command within the operations of the department. Responsible for developing training programs for department personnel, directing special units, preparing special reports or projects as assigned, receiving and reviewing reports from officers, and assigning personnel in accordance to specific needs. Being a Police Sergeant requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 5-7 years of law enforcement experience. Typically reports to a chief of police, captain, or lieutenant. The Police Sergeant manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. SUMMARY OF DUTIES :
This position supervises officers in the "completion of their duties and to provide assistance to APD Command or his / her designee.
This position also is responsible for safety and protection of all persons and property and the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws.

Annual : 5 Year Lateral (First Year at 95%) $137,046, After 1 year probation $144,259, Top Step (100%) $159,042.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
Safety : The incumbent acts to establish safety as an integral and continuous part of all processes and procedures. The incumbent recognizes and acts upon the premise that safety is a responsibility of all employees.
The incumbent identifies hazards and acts pro-actively to protect employees and the public. The incumbent develops and maintains rail security partnerships related to Operation Lifesaver outreach programs.
Enforcement / Investigation / Patrol : The incumbent conducts preliminary investigation / takes enforcement action, when necessary, according to established law and departmental standards.
The incumbent performs patrol related duties to include responding to calls for service, and assisting passengers, patrons, and employees, of the corporation.
Administrative Activities : The incumbent submits grammatically correct, legibly written reports and memoranda on a timely basis.
The incumbent maintains required investigation files. The incumbent assists by making recommendations as to staffing levels, schedule changes, use of sick time, and analyzes vehicle maintenance and other administrative procedures and activities related to unit.
Supervisory Activities : The incumbent monitors the performance of subordinates and makes corrections / recommendations when deficiencies-are noted.
The incumbent inspects subordinates for fitness for duty, conducts and / or monitors roll calls, and inspects equipment / vehicles for operational readiness and safety.
The incumbent also keeps commander apprised of unusual circumstances.
Communication : The incumbent maintains a regular line of communication with law enforcement, judicial, and administrative groups and develops liaison-when possible.
Employee testimony in court or administrative hearing is clear and provides all relevant information. Incumbent keeps supervisor abreast of condition, which could impact upon police operations.
Incumbent notifies victim and witness on court and administrative activities.
Training : The incumbent maintains a regular line of communication with law enforcement, judicial, and administrative groups and develops liaison-when possible.

Customer Oriented Policing : The incumbent actively displays the Customer Oriented Policing philosophy by developing partnerships with customers and applying problem-solving techniques in the consistent delivery of quality police service.
