Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision. Police Recruit Salary is $56,107 until completion of training. Upon completion of field training and progression to officer status, the salary increases to $58,536. New officers hired before January 1, will be eligible for a step increase at the new fiscal year. New employee hires hired after January 1, will receive their step increase the following fiscal year. Upon completion of field training and receipt of the Step 2 increase, officer salary increases to $59,853. Must be a US citizen; must have a high school diploma or GED; be at least 21 years of age prior to completion of the field training program. Successful applicants must pass a physical ability test. Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia driver's license with no more than six demerit points in the past twelve months or a DUI conviction within the past four years; binocular vision of 20/25 corrected; weight in proportion to height. No conviction of felonies and/or habitual misdemeanors. No conviction of, or guilty plea or no contest plea to: misdemeanor sex offense, or any domestic assault, pass an extensive background investigation, which includes a polygraph, psychological, medical and drug screening. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.
Operate an assigned patrol vehicle. Patrol assigned areas of the county for traffic and criminal violations; respond to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information. Conduct victim, witness, and suspect interviews. Prepare detailed reports. Make arrests; testify in court; interact with community groups and organizations. Perform other police patrol operations in the field as assigned and as needed. Perform other work as required.
