    Minimum hourly rate for certified is $21.29 /hour ( Minimum base salary is $44,283.20 plus an excellent benefit package. Base salary is based on 40 hrs/wk and does not include any overtime pay or holiday pay. A first year certified Police Officer averages an annual salary of $49,818 based on a 12-hour work schedule plus holiday pay.)

    JOB SUMMARY

    This position performs police work involving the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws, and the investigation of crime.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    · Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

    · Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

    · Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

    · Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.

    MAJOR DUTIES

    · Answers calls relayed by a dispatcher, to include: domestic disputes, burglaries, suspicious characters, traffic accidents, etc.

    · Patrols assigned geographical area of the city in order to monitor businesses, residences and public areas.

    · Writes reports and completes forms, including incident and accident reports.

    · Apprehends and cites traffic law violators; directs traffic in congested areas as needed.

    · Provides first aid and CPR as needed.

    · Executes search and arrest warrants.

    · Testifies in judicial proceedings when necessary.

    · Assists other departmental units and other law enforcement agencies as requested.

    · Secures and preserves the scenes of crimes and fatal traffic accidents until appropriate support units arrive and assists with investigation.

    · Performs public service duties, such as assisting lost and stranded motorists, entering locked cars, providing transportation to citizens in need, etc.

    · Arrests and takes prisoners into custody; processes persons arrested.

    · Inspects weapons and patrol car; monitors patrol car maintenance.

    · Assists with local school functions.

    · Provides courtroom security.

    · Participates in special duty assignments.

    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

    · Knowledge of city geography and road systems.

    · Knowledge of local, state and federal laws.

    · Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.

    · Skill in the safe operation of a motor vehicle while monitoring area for suspicious and/or criminal activity and during emergency situations.

    · Skill in first aid and CPR applications.

    · Skill in oral and written communication.

    · Skill in the use of firearms and other weapons and in the use of physical force.

    · Skill in observing and accurately recalling details.

    · Skill in operating a computer and other electronic devices.

    · Skill in multi-tasking.

    · Skill in making rapid judgment calls and in problem solving.

    Employment in law enforcement involves public trust. Only those persons whose conduct, character and behavior which does not discredit either themselves or the RHPD will be considered for employment. The RHPD employment screening process addresses the integrity, ethical conduct, honesty, prejudices, financial responsibility (credit), and past behavior of all applicants. While RHPD reviews much information and considers the circumstances in many areas regarding an applicant’s background, the following standards are among those that will automatically disqualify applicants from consideration:

    DRIVER’S LICENSE HISTORY MUST NOT CONTAIN: ■ DUI/DWI charge with the disposition of Nolo Contendere, conviction or plea within the past seven years. ■ Suspensions in the past three years (Insurance Cancellations will be reviewed). ■ Three or more violations in the past two years or five or more in the past seven years.

    ■Vehicular Homicide or Hit and Run charge/arrests. ■ Fleeing or Attempting to Elude the Police charge/arrests.

    ■Driver’s History that reflects a disregard for safety of the traveling public.

    CRIMINAL HISTORY MUST NOT CONTAIN: ■ Pending Criminal cases. ■ Convictions, Nolo Contendere or pleas involving Sexual Offenses, Domestic Violence Act or Impersonation of a Police Officer, Perjury or False Statements. ■ Felony convictions and Nolo Contendere or pleas involving felony arrests. Serious Misdemeanor Convictions, Nolo Contendere or pleas.

    THOSE WITH PRIOR LAW ENFORCEMENT EXPERIENCE: ■Currently under investigation by certifying agency (i.e. POST). ■ Any disciplinary action or sustained complaint for offenses of a serious nature, which includes, but is not limited to, sexual harassment, untruthfulness, insubordination or use of force. ■ Any pending disciplinary action or internal investigation.

    APPLICANTS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FOR THE FOLLOWING: ■Untruthfulness or the omission of information throughout the application process.

    ■Anything other than an Honorable Discharge from Armed Forces. ■Membership or association with any hate or terrorist group.

    ■Unsatisfactory work history within the past five years. ■Unsatisfactory information derived from extensive background investigation.

    ■Distribution or sale of a controlled substance. ■ Current use or recreational/casual use within the past five years of any illegal drug/narcotic as defined in the Georgia Controlled Substance Act.

    SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

    The Sergeant or Corporal assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

    Guidelines include department policies and procedures and federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

    · The work consists of varied duties related to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Potentially dangerous and life threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.

    · The purpose of this position is to participate in law enforcement activities. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency of department operations.

    · Contacts are typically with co-workers, representatives of other departments, the general public, school personnel, students, victims, witnesses, offenders, and representatives of federal, state, and local law enforcement and judicial agencies.

    · Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

    · The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, runs short distances, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

    · The work is typically performed in an office, patrol car, and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. Work requires the use of specialized law enforcement equipment.
