Police Patrol Officer is responsible for patrolling an assigned area to prevent and discover crime and to enforce regulations. Responsible for responding to calls, taking necessary action at the scene of crime or disturbance, conducting investigations, making arrests, testifying in court, and completing reports/forms and routine paperwork. Being a Police Patrol Officer requires an associate degree in criminal justice and/or additional certifications and at least 12 to 18 months of law enforcement experience. Requires Firearms Certification. Additionally, Police Patrol Officer typically reports to a police sergeant. The Police Patrol Officer works under moderate supervision. The written examination and physical fitness examination will be held on April 27, 2024. If both of those examinations are completed, police board and civil service interviews will be conducted on April 29, 2024. The certified applicant list for hiring will be posted at the conclusion of the interviews on March 4, 2024.

While at the academy, recruits are paid a full salary of a first year officer. Upon graduation from the academy, the new officers begin an 18-week Field Training Program. This program is designed to give them on the job training with an experienced police officer and allow them to work on various patrol shifts. After completing the Field Training Program, new officers are assigned to a patrol shift and evaluated throughout their 18-month probationary period.
Special Assignments
Officers also receive individual training opportunities to enhance job performance and develop specialized skills throughout their careers. After the probationary period, an officer has the opportunity to apply for a variety of specialized assignments, such as:
