Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. Summary of Position:
Reporting directly to the Captain, the Lieutenant is responsible for the overall, tactical day to day management of the Suffolk University Police Department including the direct supervision of all Sergeants and the indirect supervision of all the departments’ members on all shifts. The Lieutenant assures that all routine operations are carried out on all shifts and will adjust shift coverage and assignments as necessary, to accommodate unusual circumstances or emergency response as the need occurs.
Principal Responsibilities:
The Lieutenant oversees the maintenance of Department equipment, reviews and processes all Department reports returning to the appropriate Sergeant those which need to be completed more thoroughly, assigns investigations and periodically reviews their progress, oversees the training and orientation of new staff, participates with other ranking officers in interviewing applicants for patrol and security positions making hiring and promotion recommendations to the Chief, praises and/or disciplines staff as necessary including putting staff on report or on written warning recommending further action to the Captain. The Lieutenant reviews and advises the Captain on the Department’s day to day operations and on the Department’s special programs and assists in the development and implementation of new and existing policies and programs.
The Lieutenant is assigned administrative duties which may vary depending upon the Department’s needs. Duties might include, but are not limited to: the submission and supervision of weekly payroll records; development and maintenance of work schedules; scheduling and billing for paid details; supervision of all investigations; maintenance of parking tickets, recovered property and training records; ordering and maintaining Department uniforms.
Shift duties include the supervision of all officers below Lieutenant rank on the shift, arrangement of shift coverage, transmission of orders, assignment of work, orientation and training of staff as required, inspection of uniforms. While not performing any of the above duties, the Lieutenant may perform patrol duties.
