Police Lieutenant supervises a team of police sergeants and other law enforcement support staff. Responsible for officer assignments, patrol operations, and investigations. Being a Police Lieutenant prepares and reviews reports. Ensures all policies and procedures are followed. Additionally, Police Lieutenant coordinates in-service training, staff performance evaluation and development. Requires a bachelor's degree in criminal justice or closely related field. Typically reports to a chief of police or police captain. The Police Lieutenant typically manages through subordinate managers and professionals in larger groups of moderate complexity. Provides input to strategic decisions that affect the functional area of responsibility. May give input into developing the budget. To be a Police Lieutenant typically requires 3+ years of managerial experience. Capable of resolving escalated issues arising from operations and requiring coordination with other departments.     Primary Duties and Responsibilities: The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents in this position. Incumbents may not be required to perform all duties in this description, and incumbents may be required to perform position-specific tasks other than those listed in this job description.Directs operations to preserve the peace and assure the Sheriff's Office's smooth functioning of patrol and transportation functionsManages patrol staff; delegates assignments, oversees the deployment of personnel, monitors work, and evaluates performance; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; assures effective communication of Sheriff's Office issues and goalsAssures that Deputies are ready and prepared for duty, are adequately trained and equipped, and are held accountable for tasks and responsibilities assignedConducts regular staff briefings; coordinates work schedules; reviews case reports and warrants; assures that all investigative reports and paperwork are completed on time; advises Sheriff regarding significant developments with investigations, employee conduct, and citizen complaints; assures effective communications of special law enforcement issues, and changes in procedures and protocolsManages critical incidents as needed; may respond to major crime scenes to assist when appropriate; reviews and approves reportsConducts research and planning functions; analyzes operational trends and makes recommendations for resources, staffing adjustments, and personnel assignmentsCoordinates with Chief Deputy Sheriff to review changes in North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) program training, regulations, and policies; responds to new regulations and procedures; and assures mandated training and recertification is completedCollects and compiles statistical data for reports; updates and maintains case records and personnel filesMonitors and inspects vehicles and equipment and assures proper maintenance procedures are followedCoordinates issues and activities with County departments, regional law enforcement operations, federal, state, and local law enforcement organizationsCoordinates with transportation division for prisoner and special custody transportsMay attend public meetings and coordinates discussions on law enforcement issues for citizen groups.Enforces local, state, and federal laws and enforces compliance with local regulations and ordinances, according to policies, procedures, and regulationsPerforms law enforcement duties as needed and assists Deputies in the performance of their dutiesMaintains the integrity, professionalism, and ethical standards of the Sheriff's Office by assuring that all rules and regulations are followedMaintains confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information deemed a public record by the North Dakota Century Code.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
    Special Working Conditions: Work is mainly performed in an internal office environment; intermittent exposure to outdoor inclement weather and varying temperatures; subject to physical harm such as dangerous vehicles, gun shots, and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, infections and communicable diseases; required to physically restrain persons. Compensation: Compensation for this position ranges from $53$57/hour, and depends on experience and training.
