    General Manager of Maintenance and Repair Nightside

    Summary: The General Manager of M&R Nightside develops and maintains positive customer relations by understanding customer needs, contract terms and conditions, and by implementing and executing plans to address those needs. The GM of M&R supervises a union workforce in the execution of maintenance and repair activities of port terminal cargo handling equipment. Safety, Customer Service, Production and Labor Relations are the areas of focus for this position.

    Responsibilities:

    • Supervise mechanics, clerks, leadmen, chief clerks, and foreman in their work assignments and evaluate the performance of all employees under your direction.
    • Participate in the development and Implementation of company safety policies and procedures.
    • Actively manage and monitor the safety of your operation, ensuring safety of all employees.
    • Identify training opportunities of staff as needed.
    • Determine work needs for each shift and assign such work to the workforce.
    • Manage and implement daily operational changes to improve efficiency and quality of work.
    • Analyze the quality of work performed, post-audit repairs with mechanics as needed.
    • Reassign mechanics to other locations or work assignments based on operational need.
    • Select and evaluate leadmen and foreman for your operations.
    • Engage in an interactive process with mechanics, as necessary, regarding reasonable accommodation of disabilities.
    • Participate in the interview process for potential new hires and make recommendations.
    • Conduct 30, 60, and 90-day evaluations for all new hires.
    • Adhere to the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and ensure positive labor relations with mechanics and union officials.
    • Issue internal warnings and/or employer complaints and ass needed.
    • Address and manage worker’s comp procedures.
    • Keeps Director and Vice President updated and informed daily of Safety, Customer Service, Production, and Labor Relation activities.
    • All other duties and projects assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
    Requirements:


    Qualifications and Requirements:

    • B.S. in Marine, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or equivalent and applicable working experience.
    • Minimum 5 years of general supervisory experience in maintenance and repair or union environments preferred.
    • Experience in Programmable Logic Controls in GE, FUJI, Siemens, and OMRON highly desired.
    • Familiar with the maintenance of engines, hydraulic systems, refrigeration systems, container and chassis maintenance and container cranes highly desired.
    • Valid driver’s license and TWIC

    Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Must have strong management skills with the ability to work on a team and lead department workforce.
    • Knowledge of safety regulations and processes and ability to enforce.
    • Knowledge of mechanic, hydraulic and electrical assemblies, and testing experience.
    • Must have strong organization skills with the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
    • Ability to accept constructive criticism.
    • Ability to analyze and problem solve.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Must have good interpersonal skills and be customer relations focused.
    • Must have good mathematical skills.
    • Requires good technical skills and knowledge of maintenance and repair.

    Ability to climb a ladder and work from heights.

    • Ability to work in an environment with high level of noise.
    • Ability to work in changing outdoor climates.
    • Ability to work on rotating shifts, days, nights, holidays, and weekends as needed.
