    New Mexico Cancer Center (NMCC), as a subsidiary of New Mexico Oncology and Hematology Consultants (NMOHC), in Albuquerque, NM, is a premier free-standing cancer center that treats more than 300 patients every year. The physics/technical group consists of 1 chief physicist, 1 senior medical physicist, 1 junior physicist, 3 dosimetrists, Varian service engineers and information system administrators. The clinical group consists of 3 radiation oncologists, 3 nurses, 1 chief therapist, and 6 staff therapists.

    Equipment

    The main campus has two LINACs: a Truebeam and a 21EX (will be replaced with another TrueBeam in 2024), a kilovoltage superficial x-ray unit (Sensus SRT) and a HDR Bravos unit. Patient simulation includes a GE LightSpeed CT (which will be replaced in April 2024) and a Phillips PET-CT. One satellite clinic has a Varian 21iX and Phillips Big Bore CT. The main treatment planning system/OIS is Eclipse/ARIA. AlignRT is used at the main campus for SGRT/DIBH treatments. Other software consists of Total QA, DoseLab, MIM Maestro, Limbus AI, Radformation products (ClearCalc, ClearCheck, EZFluence and Quickcode).

    Clinical

    The medical physicist will work in collaboration with other medical physicists and the Director of Medical Physics to support daily clinical physics tasks and duties, and to manage the clinic Quality Assurance Management (QAM) program, which include the following principal duties and responsibilities:

    • Performs quality assurance (QA) and calibration functions such as accelerator QA, CT simulator QA monthly and annually; HDR QA daily and quarterly; TPS QA annually.
    • Performs routine chart checks, plan reviews, and secondary dose calculations.
    • Performs HDR brachytherapy treatment planning, delivery, and documentation.
    • Performs external beam radiotherapy treatment planning, when needed.
    • Implements quality assurance, quality control, CQI and relevant safety measures with regards to patient’s treatments.
    • Performs applications of specific in vivo dosimetry (OSL, TLD, film) in special clinical settings.
    • Participates in the implementation of new technologies into clinical workflow, identifying cost containment initiatives or revenue enhancement projects.
    • Consults with radiation oncologists and radiation therapists to solve any technical problems and/or devices special techniques necessary for the treatment.
    • Understands the rules and regulations by the state governing the usage of radioactive materials and applies that knowledge in good practice.

    Skills

    • Demonstrates outstanding verbal and written communication skills to relate important clinically relevant information to patients and other professionals. Excellent interpersonal skills.
    • Possesses a teamwork mentality and philosophy to accomplish departmental goals.
    • Makes decisions independently and critically, acknowledges accountability for clinical decisions.
    • Occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs. may be involved.

    Qualifications

    • Master’s, Ph.D., or DMP Degree in Medical Physics or equivalent fields.
    • Certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR), or equivalent certifying bodies.
    • Board eligible candidates will also be considered. Must have passed ABR Part I.
