    Assists the Radiation Oncologist and other Medical Physicists regarding IMRT QA, dosimetry, calibration, treatment planning, and radiation protection.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

    1. Master of Science degree in Physics, Radiation Physics, or equivalent.

    2. Certification in therapeutic radiological physics must be attained within 3 years of hire.

    CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. They are not intended to be constructed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties. Other duties may be assigned.

    1. Assists with treatment planning as needed. Assists in development of computerized treatment planning. Assists with dosimetry for Iridium, Cesium and other isotopes as needed for Brachytherapy.

    2. Assists with treatment planning as needed. Assists in development of computerized treatment planning. Assists with dosimetry for Iridium, Cesium and other isotopes as needed for Brachytherapy.

    3. Assists in the oversight of use of ionizing radiation to insure compliance with Federal and State regulations. Following an inspection, assists in making any changes needed. Helps Monitors film badge records of the hospital and carry out the hospital ALARA program (keeping exposure as low as reasonably achievable) and assists in the updating of radiation safety procedures.

    4. Performs the calibration of x-ray equipment in hospital. Performs radiation protection surveys as needed. Assists in the preparation and submission of the appropriate documents to renew and amend the hospital radioactive materials licenses with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the State of West Virginia.

    5. Provides calibration of sealed sources (Cs-137, Ir-192, etc.). Ensures that periodic leak tests of sealed sources are performed. Is responsible for accountability of sealed sources and therapeutic isotopes. Maintains log of use of isotopes. Assists in the provision and oversight of Provides and radiation safety procedures in the use of therapeutic isotopes both in the department and on the nursing floors.

    6. Assists technologists, dosimetrist, and chief medical physicist with and involved patient set-ups. Makes periodic checks of radiotherapy charts to see that they are technically correct. Assists the chief medical physicist and dosimetrist in development and oversight of procedures of tumor localization in collaboration with the Oncologist. Designs and/or obtains patient treatment aids such as mould work, block shaping, patient support, etc., to provide better patient treatment and oversee their use.

    7. Calibrates therapy machines including input, energy and beam profiles.

    8. Works with the Radiation Oncologists, Chief Therapist, Chief Medical Physicist, and Dosimetrist to develop new methods of treatment.

    9. Maintains a professional working relationship with all departmental Associates; always responds to Associate concerns in a professional and timely manner; maintains appropriate interdepartmental communication. HR/VP interviews of Associates/Annual Survey.

    Frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, and stooping during the normal course of machine operation.

    Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, and feeling of patients during patient set-up. Must be able to lift and move patients of weights, with varying amounts of assistance in a safe manner on a regular basis.

    3.

    Must be able to lift block trays weighing up to 40 lbs. to a position about 5 feet above the floor, while possessing the dexterity to slide that tray into a narrow slot above the patient.

    4.

    Must be able to maneuver through narrow spaces approximately 9 - 18 inches wide.

    5.

    Must be able to view the patient from above and in some situations must be able to climb stool to see from above.

    6.

    Must have excellent hearing ability to maintain constant communication with the patient via an intercom.

    7.

    Must be able to read and write legibly in English; must have reading and comprehension ability.

    8.

    Visual acuity must be within normal range.

    9.

    Must be able to perform medium work; exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
