Physician - Radiation Therapy uses radiation to treat patients with cancer. Develops an individual treatment plan based on the patient's medical history, physical examination, review of laboratory tests, X-ray studies, and biopsies. Being a Physician - Radiation Therapy works with medical radiation physicists and dosimetrists to calculate and deliver the exact dose of radiation to the cancer tissue. Requires a MD degree from an accredited school. Additionally, Physician - Radiation Therapy requires a valid state license to practice. May report to a medical director.     A radiation therapist primarily works with patients being treated for cancer. They record a patient's medical information, locate tumors using x-rays and develop treatment plans within the guidelines set by a supervising radiologist and others on the cancer patient's oncologic team.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    Required:

     

    • Radiation safety expertise
    • Ability to communicate well with patients and co-workers
    • Ability to maintain a high level of accuracy in a high-paced treatment environment
    • Troubleshooting skills regarding treatment parameters - (problem-solving)
    • Computer skills and knowledge of record and verify computer programs

     

     

    Certifications and Licenses Required:

     

    • New Jersey State Radiation Therapy license
    • 2-4 year degree in ARRT approved radiation therapy program

     

    Scheduling Requirements:

     

    • Per Diem

     

    Essential Functions:

     

    • Uses beams of radiated light to locate and treat cancerous tumors according to the plan prescribed by a radiologist and oncologist
    • Observing and documenting any reactions to treatment
    • Updating charts
    • Answering any radiology related questions a patient might have
    • Maintain equipment and follow all safety regulations regarding radiation exposure  for the safety of their patients
