    Sunflower Neonatology Associates (SNA) is a diverse private practice neonatology group founded in 2004 providing family centered, evidence-based medical care for ill and premature infants. We are looking to onboard 1-2 neonatal hospitalists to add to our team of 25 neonatal nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Our coverage consists of five area Midwest hospitals, but current position is for one primary hospital for the physician to join. 

     

    The NICU Hospitalist assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the medical care for neonatal patients in the Level III NICUs in collaboration with neonatologist. This includes providing necessary emergency, acute supportive care for the ill neonate. In addition, the physician works in close collaboration with the family, the medical team, and the hospital staff to meet the specific needs of the infant.

     

    Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a Level III NICU associated with the HCA hospital system and located in Overland Park, Kansas. It is one of the largest NICUs in the state of Kansas and services the Kansas City metro and area communities. While most infants are inborn, there is an active maternal and neonatal transport team. The NICU is a private 55-bed unit with average daily census in the 40s. We provide state of the art care for the most fragile neonates from 22 weeks’ gestation to postdates in need of intensive care. Our unit has a specialized micro-preemie unit. We also specialize in whole body cooling, have a maternal-fetal center, and have access to multiple subspecialists. Our subspecialty coverage includes pediatric surgery, pediatric neurology, developmental pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, ENT, craniofacial team, pediatric plastics, pediatric genetics, and pediatric endocrinology.  In addition, we also have dedicated NICU therapists including speech, occupational, and physical therapists with occasional child life and music therapy.

    Responsibilities

    • Attends deliveries of high-risk infants as requested by OB personnel. Collaboration with neonatologist for specific deliveries and any concerning deliveries by the hospitalist.
    • Provides primary care for high-risk neonates upon delivery to include evaluation and supportive care in the delivery room as indicated by clinical exam, resuscitates the infant when necessary, and transfer to the intensive care nursery, as appropriate.
    • Obtains OB/medical history and physical assessment, to prioritize, develop and implement an initial plan of care based on infant’s clinical status. Determines the differential diagnoses and management of presenting problems and their management plan with the neonatologist.
    • Able to carry out the necessary procedures and training will be available if needed. Those procedures include LMA placement, intubations, PIV placement, UVC/UAC placement, lumbar puncture, venipuncture, arterial puncture, exchange transfusion, thoracentesis, thoracostomy, abdominal paracentesis, suprapubic bladder tap, and cardioversion. This would be in guidance with neonatologist if necessary.
    • Responsible for daily rounding on a group of NICU patients in collaboration with attending neonatologists and multidisciplinary health care team. Working efficiently and productively, selecting, and interpreting necessary diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, making referrals, and documenting clearly in the patient medical records.
    • Requires clear, professional communication skills. Able to discuss other’s and own ideas in an open, objective manner and stay focused on goal of providing the best quality care to neonates and their families. Recognizes and takes initiative for appropriate actions to resolve conflicts. Maintain respectful and professional working relationships.
    • Demonstrates leadership qualities and professional attitude toward self and others. Often being the leader of the team, working under stress, and knowing when to ask for help whenever necessary.
    • Performs in a manner to create and sustain a positive work culture in collaboration with neonatologist, neonatology nurse practitioners and nurses.

    Qualifications

    Education: MD, DO or equivalent is required

     

    Qualifications: Completion of an ACGME-approved pediatric residency program is required.

     

    License/Certification:

    • Candidate is required to have, or be eligible, for Kansas medical licensure.
    • Board certification or board eligibility in Pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics is required.
    • Must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges.
    • Candidate is required to have, or to be eligible, to take Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) and maintain licensure.

    Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/Renewable

     

    Work Schedule: Three 12-hour night shifts with consistent nights can be considered, night covered with another person (transport neonatal practitioner) with neonatologist by phone or in person coverage if needed
