    TITLE: Ophthalmology Technician

    JOB OVERVIEW: This position performs administrative and technical functions to support the Ophthalmologist in facilitating patient flow during their evaluation and treatment.

    HOURS OF WORK: Days and hours will vary.

    AREA OF ASSIGNMENT: Ophthalmology Clinic

    RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinic Manager/Ophthalmologist

    PREREQUISITES:

    This position requires completion of an approved training program or 1 year of Ophthalmic Tech experience and demonstrated ability to perform technical procedures.

    Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician is preferred.

    American Heart Association CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers required within 90 days of hire.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Working knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the eye.

    An understanding of ocular diseases and disorders of the eye.

    Working knowledge of ocular medications and an understanding of: lensometry, keratometry, refractometry, retinoscopy, a-scan, b-scan, automated and manual visual field testing, visual acuity color testing, Schirmer's test, tonometer, pupilometer, function testing, Blair testing, blood pressure, contact lens insertion and care, minor surgical procedures, medical terminology, metric conversion, universal precautions, sterilization techniques, amsler testing and color testing.

    UNIQUE PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS, ENVIRONMENT, AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

    This position makes decisions about the type of exam to schedule and its urgency, the level of exam prior to the physician encounter, the level of patient history to document, and the proper schedule for treatment/procedures, as well as possible involvement with other providers.

    Decisions referred to a higher authority include certain exam issues such as follow-up visits and fundus exams, diagnosis and treatment, changing medications, and urgency of scheduling major surgical procedures.

    Decisions dictated by policy or procedures include OSHA precautions, work safety precautions, E-call rotation, pre-op testing/evaluation, and billing and referrals.

    One of the major challenges facing this position is to provide an appropriate level of care for seriously/terminally ill patients that are potentially infectious. Another challenge facing this position is to coordinate schedules and treatments to maintain a pre-determined schedule. A third challenge facing this position is to adjust to expanding practices and changes within the department to effectively service patients. A fourth challenge facing this position is to ensure that all information is accurate and concise when working with patients who have language other than English as their first language.

    Provide patient care to work-up according to the accepted standard techniques and physician instructions.

    Conduct visual field testing according to the accepted standards.

    Provide both verbal and written patient education so that the patient leaves with a solid understanding of their problem/condition.

    Assist the physician in the laser suite, exam room, and other areas to enhance physician effectiveness.

    Use of the following equipment is required: Slit Lamp/Biomicroscope; Tonometer; Visual Field Analyzer; A-Scan; B-Scan; Keratometer, Autorefractor; Trial Frames and Lenses; Corneal Topographer; Tonopen; Autolensometer; Retinoscope; Yag Laser; Argon/Dye Laser; Indirect Laser; Phoropter; Transilluminator; Basic Office Equipment.
