MAJOR DUTIESParticipates in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, as a board certified expert physician and consultant in Nephrology. May also work in other clinical areas as a board certified specialist in internal medicine, to include the Inpatient Services Section and the Internal Medicine clinic.1. Primary clinical duties include providing inpatient and outpatient nephrology consultations, acute and chronic dialysis, therapeutic plasma exchange and manage complex metabolic problems. Completes consults, procedure reports and reports of other patient encounters utilizing existing documentation systems. Makes appropriate entries in patient health care records and signs or electronically authenticates the entries. Ensures patient encounter documentation and reports are comprehensive and clearly communicates patient information to other healthcare providers. Verifies the content and correctness of all prepared patient documentation and reports by validating its contents prior to signature or electronic authentication. Corrects any errors or omissions in patient documentation and reports. This physician will routinely diagnose and treat rare and exceptionally complex cases. Clinical duties may include but are not limited to examination, diagnosis and treatment of patients with kidney disease. Provides dialysis care including: chronic outpatient hemodialysis, acute in-hospital dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapy. Provides therapeutic plasma exchange. Examines patients, makes diagnoses and administers appropriate treatment. Performs procedures such as placement of central venous access for acute hemodialysis, urine microscopy, supervises dialysis treatments and therapeutic plasma exchange treatments, etc. As appropriate refers patients to other specialty clinics as required for further evaluation either on an outpatient or inpatient basis. Admits and discharges patients as required. Cares for ambulatory, acute patients as well as long term chronic and difficult patients. Orders and interprets laboratory tests and x-rays necessary to complete medical evaluation of cases to include: blood counts, urinalysis, sedimentation rates, chest x-rays, electrocardiograms, etc. Consults with specialist in other fields when assistance is required to determine the best diagnosis or best treatment. 2. Participates in the physicians teaching program. Guides, instructs, and trains interns, residents. Trains physicians from other hospitals, medical students from universities, and other professional personnel as required. Actively participates in Department lectures and ground rounds. 3. Serves as the subject matter expert/consultant with regard to the specialized field of Nephrology. The incumbent exchanges advice and consultation with other expert physicians on the diagnoses and treatment of patients, especially in the area of Internal Medicine/Nephrology. 4. Participates in required Department/Service activities (e.g. QA). Mentors and performs independent clinical or basic science research. Performs, under the supervision of Chief of the Service, peer review, quality assurance and performance improvement on the nephrology service and other areas as directed. Performs other duties as assigned.
• Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).
• Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.
• Licensure/Certification: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
