    The Section Chief, Infectious Disease Physician will serve as a fulltime attending physician to provide infectious diseases subspecialty care at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. They will provide oversight for all the clinical, research, education and administrative responsibilities of the ID Section at the VAMC in Washington, DC.

    The Section Chief is responsible for the ID consultation services for inpatients and outpatients, integrated primary and subspecialty care for HIV infected patients, management of infections among immunocompromised patients, and clinical testing in the ID laboratory.

    (1) The clinical duties for the ID consultation services for inpatients and outpatients includes integrated primary and subspecialty care for HIV-infected patients. The inpatient ID consult service provides recommendations for the diagnosis and management of infections throughout the entire medical center including the Community Living Center. Outpatient ID consultations include guidance in diagnosis and treatment for a variety of infections, prevention of infections and travel medicine.

    (2) The section chief has educational duties as a member of the faculty in our Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program managed jointly by VA Medical Center and George Washington University; this is a 2-year program which has 5 fellows and is accredited through the ACGME. All physician staff hold faculty appointments at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and teach medical students, interns, residents and Infectious Disease fellows through supervised clinical work, lectures and formal didactic presentations May be required to oversee midlevel practitioners, such as nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.

    (3) The section Chief has oversight of the research portfolios of all staff related to basic science, epidemiology, clinical trials, and projects with trainees. The ID section has ongoing VA, national and international clinical trials and projects in ID, and the chief should seek new research funding opportunities.

    (4) Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.

    (5) Educational responsibilities: the Chief of the section is a crucial member of the faulty of our academic affiliate. The ID fellowship program is managed jointly by the VAMC and GWU. It is a two year program with 5 fellows, and is ACGME accredited. All staff hold faculty appointments at the GWU school of medicine, commensurate with academic experience.

    (6) The Chief is responsible for all staff work performance, timely ID consultations, patients access to the ID clinic and works closely with the microbiology laboratory, infection control, antibiotic stewardship, and occupational health to lend expertise for optimizing testing , guidance for hospital epidemiology and assistance of work related exposures .

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • A current, active board certification
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
      [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
      (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
      Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Work Environment: Work is performed primarily in a patient care setting; adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically; involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as clinics, offices, meeting and training rooms or libraries; exposure to noise and dust on occasion. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
    Preferred Experience:

    The Section chief candidate will have at least 5-7 years of clinical experience, as well as leadership and administrative experience. They should also have a history of successful clinical or basic research, as well as a strong background in trainee education, at the house staff and fellow level.

    Physical Requirements:The physician is expected to be able to travel throughout the campus of the VA Medical Center which has 6 adjoining buildings with a maximum of 5 levels to perform his/her duties. Able to use equipment in the clinic examination room, office, medical ward and conference room(s) without difficulty. VA Directive and Handbook 5019. Light lifting, under 15 pounds; light carrying, under 15 pounds; Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands required; Walking (6hrs); Standing (6hrs); Repeated bending (2hrs); Operation of crane, truck, tractor, or motor vehicle; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; Both eyes required; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); Mental/emotional stability; Ability to perform privileges; Independently performs physical exam as appropriate to position; Cognitive stability

    Education

    Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
    • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
    • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    • For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
    NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
