Physician Assistant - Specialty assesses, plans, and provides patient care in a medical specialty, such as cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, etc. under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Specialty orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Specialty requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires a master's degree in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Requires State license to practice. Typically reports to a physician.     • JOB SUMMARY
        • The Physician Assistant Academic Residency in Cardiology is offered in conjunction with the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences.  This is a one-year (October 2024 to October 2025) academic residency program open to recent graduate (or soon-to-graduate) physician assistants only.  The PA resident will be responsible for practicing medicine with physician supervision including conducting examinations and writing prescriptions.  Within the physician—PA relationship, PAs exercise autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services. The PA resident will rotate through cardiology subspecialties including non-invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, advanced heart failure management, and structural cardiology with limited exposure to cardiac and vascular surgery.  The PA resident will be required to meet the educational requirements set forth by the UK College of Health Sciences Academic Residency Program which include didactic, teaching, and research responsibilities.

    • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
          • Assesses patient status by obtaining health history through patient/family interviews and chart reviews; assessing presenting illness, risk factors, and family history, psychosocial situation, and cultural factors; and performing appropriate physical examination.
          • Orders/performs appropriate laboratory diagnostic and other screening and therapeutic tests. Seeks other information as needed, including consultation with physicians and other clinicians, for evaluation of illness. Integrates data to determine diagnosis and therapeutic plan, including identification of any health risks.
          • Develops and implements treatment plan by prescribing/dispensing medications and/or injections in compliance with medical practice guidelines and state laws. Instructs patient/family regarding medications and treatments. Educates patients regarding health promotion/illness prevention. Recommends appropriate community resources to meet patient/family needs. Communicates appropriate case management information to other professionals and community agencies. Prepares documentation for medical records including updating patient medical chart by posting examination and test results, diagnosis, medications, and treatment in written/computerized manner
          • Participates in peer reviews, chart reviews, staff education, clinical guideline development, and other continuing education and quality assurance activities to demonstrate compliance with standards, regulations, policies, and procedures.  Acts as consultant/collaborator to clinical team on area of specialty. Complies with patient confidentiality requirements. Promotes patient advocacy.
          • Collaborates with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patient. Provides monitoring and continuity of care between visits according to treatment plan including triaging patient calls/e-mails
          • Promptly and accurately closes medical records adhering to policy and procedure
          • Adheres to and meets additional requirements as set forth by the University of Kentucky College of Health Science PA Academic Residency including program objectives, procedural competencies, and essential experiences as outlined on their website: https://www.uky.edu/chs/pas-academic-residency-program

    • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
      • Minimum requirement:
              • New or recent graduate of an ARC-PA approved PA program (or graduating soon)
              • Passed (or eligible for) the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) exam
              • PA licensure in the state of Kentucky will be required prior to hire
              • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
      • Preferred qualifications:
              • Four years of healthcare experience prior to the PA program.
    • WORKING ENVIRONMENT

      • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
      • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation

      • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
      • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
      • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing. 
      • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
