Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma assesses, plans, and provides patient care to patients in an emergency and trauma unit under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma requires a master's degree in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Requires State license to practice. Typically reports to a physician. Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     Spine Trauma Consult Service

    The Neurosciences Service Line at Spectrum Health is seeking a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join our growing Spine Trauma Consult APP team.  As West Michigan’s leading spine referral center, the spine surgery department functions within our multidisciplinary team to provide quality spine care. The spine trauma consult team provides consultation and inpatient floor coverage at Butterworth Hospital and outpatient trauma follow up care at the Spine Center at the Blodgett professional building. New APP's can expect a 4-6 month training process. The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently after appropriate training & demonstrate excellent clinical acumen.  This position plays an integral role in the spine team and works collaboratively & cohesively with our spine surgeons.  We are excited to expand this team to 3 dedicated APP's to provide optimal coverage.

    Responsibilities/Expectations

    • 3 week rotation: inpatient 4- 12 hour shifts( Monday to Thursday 6 am to 6 pm), Inpatient 3-12 hour shifts (Friday to Sunday 6am to 6 pm), and outpatient 4- 10 hour shifts (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 8am – 5pm)
    • No call
    • Non-surgical position
    • Weekend coverage – at most 1 in 3 weekends
    • Holiday coverage – current expectation is 2-3 system holidays per year
    • Management of primary spine surgery ICU & floor patients
    • Completing spine surgery consults
    • Collaboration with other providers & members of our health care team to deliver quality & safe patient care

    Essential Functions

    • Functions in the role of advanced practitioner to coordinate comprehensive care delivery. Writes orders/prescriptions for standard formulary medications, laboratory, radiographic studies and consultations, coordinating the scheduling of admissions, diagnostic evaluations, follow-up exams, laboratory tests, referrals to home care, social services, and other community agencies, etc., in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services. Obtains histories and performs physical exams.
    • Assesses the patient’s/significant other’s, health care team’s, school’s and other community educational needs and develops, implements, evaluates and revises teaching strategies/educational programs related to area of specialty.
    • Ensures that operations are in compliance with professional standards, applicable laws, accreditation, compliance/regulatory requirements and that organizational goals are being followed. Practices in accordance with the Michigan Public Health Code.
    • Delivers care in a manner that is culturally sensitive and preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights. Acts as a patient advocate, crossing multidisciplinary lines to meet patient needs
    • Communicates, collaborates, networks with and acts as a consultant to other members of the health care team within and outside Spectrum Health. Acts as a consult in area of expertise.
    • Performs and assists with designated procedures.
    • Documents in the medical record and dictates information as appropriate.
    • Provides input into the strategic planning, implementation and evaluation of service/program. Measures the outcomes of care and evaluate services across the continuum of inpatient to outpatient services. Makes recommendations to improve the quality of patient care provided and utilizes the scientific method to research clinical problems.

    Qualifications

    • Education - Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant educational program

      Education - Nurse Practitioners who obtained their education and certification after 2000 must show evidence of completion of a master’s, post-master’s or doctorate from a Nurse Practitioner program that is accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission

      Experience - 3 years of experience typically gained through skills/knowledge/abilities in current, relevant clinical experience Previous experience functioning in a collaborative role
