Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma assesses, plans, and provides patient care to patients in an emergency and trauma unit under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma requires a master's degree in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). JOB SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Advanced practice provider performing a complete and accurate trauma history and physical, consultation note or daily progress note according to established protocols.
1. Functions as the Advanced practice provider to a group of Trauma/surgical critical care and emergency general surgery patients. Obtains a health history and performs a physical exam in order to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan in accordance with established standards, procedures and practices. Requisitions laboratory tests and radiological exams as appropriate.
2. Completes daily Trauma/surgical critical care and emergency general surgery service computerized progress note addressing all problems, plans of care, and diagnostic workup on each patient utilizing established protocols. Review and interpret lab data and radiology data each day to help formulate care plans. Enter orders in EMR.
3. Consults and works collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers in compliance with iRESPECT standards to coordinate and implement activities, promote patient/customer satisfaction and to develop an effective treatment plan.
4. Daily rounds in Trauma Intensive Care Unit, Critical Care Unit, Trauma Step-down, Trauma floor, Critical Care Assessment area making referrals and consultations if indicated.
5. Performs duties of a Trauma Advanced practice provider as delineated in protocols required to ensure continuity of patient medical care.
6. Management of CCA (Critical Care Assessment) patients in conjunction with the attending physician and CCA residents.
7. Management of Trauma Step-down in conjunction with the trauma/ surgical critical care fellow and trauma attending.
8. Management of Trauma ICU and/ or CCU in conjunction with the trauma/ surgical critical care fellow and attending physician
9. Manage/discharge trauma/surgery patients from various settings in conjunction with attending physician and/or trauma team leader
10. Manage Trauma Clinic with attending physician
11. Coordination of transfers and discharge planning with the case managers and/or social workers
12. Attends daily turnover rounds
13. Participates in the administrative and academic aspect of the trauma and surgical critical care service, in staff meetings, Performance Improvement and Patient Safety program activity, conferences, grand rounds, and other duties as delineated by the PIC or his/her designee.
14. Dictate discharge summaries in a timely manner.
15. Maintains active credentialing by medical staff.
16. Performs other duties as required.
MACHINES OR EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Medical and patient care equipment; CRT and related equipment; ventilators; arterial lines; central venous lines for infusions or dialysis; chest tubes; VAC dressings; surgical drains
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program; Master’s preferred. Additional training may be required for specialty areas. Qualified by education, training or experience to work with the adult and/or geriatric patient population as specialty assignment dictates.
EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of clinical experience as an NP or PA Preferred. . Acute care training preferred. Experience in a trauma center will be considered in lieu of acute care training. Demonstrated ability to independently work and make clinical assessments. Additional experience may be required in assigned specialty area.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: Active unencumbered Tennessee Licensure as a Physician Assistant or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (or registry eligible required). Eligible for Certificate of Fitness (Prescriptive privileges) in State of Tennessee required. AHA BLS, ACLS required. ATCN, ATLS strongly recommended.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Constant walking, standing; lifting and positioning patients/equipment; exposure to infectious agents. Visual acuity is needed to access color changes. Night, weekend and holiday coverage of inpatient census. Heavy Work - Exerting up to 150 pounds of force
