Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma assesses, plans, and provides patient care to patients in an emergency and trauma unit under the supervision of a physician. Examines patient, performs comprehensive physical examinations, and compiles patient medical data, including health history and results of physical examination. Being a Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma orders and interprets appropriate laboratory and radiographic tests. Participates in daily patient rounds, writes progress notes, conducts patient education, writes prescriptions, and prepares discharge summaries. Additionally, Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma requires a master's degree in Health Sciences for Physician Assistants or related. Requires completion of the PANCE exam administered by National Commission of the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Requires Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C). Requires State license to practice. Typically reports to a physician. Physician Assistant - Emergency & Trauma's years of experience requirement may be unspecified.     GENERAL SUMMARY

    The Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) is responsible for assisting our practice Physicians in providing high-quality care to all patients seeking care in our emergency departments.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Performs directed histories and physical exams on ED patients
    • Complies with MEMN APP oversite policy governing physician participation in APP patient care
    • Writes orders for laboratory, EKG, and imaging studies; interprets results in consultation with oversite physician
    • Orders appropriate treatment including IV fluids and medications
    • Performs procedures such as wound management, splinting, incision and drainage, epistaxis control, and others specified by delineation of privileges
    • Generates differential diagnosis as dictated by the clinical evaluation
    • Requests consultation as indicated by patient's clinical presentation and acuity
    • Communicates with primary and consulting physicians
    • Makes patient dispositions to home, inpatient admission, or transfer as clinically indicated and in consultation with supervising physician
    • Generates clear and complete patient records on every patient encounter
    • Generates clear and complete discharge instructions, prescriptions, and follow up information for discharged patients
    • Supervises and teaches PA and NP students if teaching hospital
    • Follows hospital and departmental policies and procedures
    • Attends departmental and medical staff meetings when scheduled if not working clinically or on vacation
    • Fulfills usual medical staff responsibilities in accordance with bylaws

    Education and/or Experience

    • Successful completion of a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program from an accredited institution
    • Successful completion of certification exam resulting in a PA-C or NP designation
    • At least 1 year of experience working in an acute care clinical setting strongly preferred

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Must be able to fluently read and speak English
    • Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, and systems
    • Skilled in interpersonal communication, including the ability to effectively communicate with patients and families
    • Ability to de-escalate tense situations and agitated patients
