The mission of the Photon Detection & Conversion Section is to develop new materials and devices that advance the performance and functionality of state of-the-art photon sensing, imaging, and energy conversion technologies for Naval and other defense applications. Novel 2-D materials, bulk alloys and superlattices with superior infrared sensitivity are developed for night and day maritime, land, and air-borne imaging, for platform situational awareness, missile defense, night vision, and other key defense applications. The section develops novel photovoltaic materials and devices with high energy conversion efficiency to extend operational endurance for man-portable, autonomous, and remote systems, and as efficient receivers for laser power beaming systems. As a novel extension of our work, the Section also studies the conversion of photonic to electrical signals within neurons for neural modulation and activity readout. Our core strengths are in: semiconductor modeling & optoelectronic device design to identify potential technology breakthroughs and world class capabilities in epitaxial growth, device fabrication, and material/device characterization.
