  • Job Title: Project Geologist 
    Depending on qualification the position may be filled at the geologist level. 

    Job Duties:
    The Utah Geological Survey’s Energy and Minerals Program is looking for a Project Geologist to take part in hands-on research of Utah's diverse mineral resources. Duties for this role include field-, lab-, and office-based work related to metallic and critical mineral resources, magmatic-hydrothermal processes, and structural controls on ore formation.

    A professional geology license in the State of Utah is required, or the ability to acquire this license in the first year of employment.

    Principle Duties:
    • Conduct fit-for-purpose data collection (geologic mapping, geochemical sampling, analytical measurements, etc.) and complete initial interpretation of results.
    • Create GIS-based geologic map products for use in the field and publications.
    • Research and compile data and literature relating to current project areas/topics.
    • Publish and present results and interpretations of data-driven research.
    • Manage logistics, timelines, and deliverables of existing projects; propose and scope future project concepts.

    Ideal Candidate:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in geosciences; a Master’s degree is helpful. 
    • 3 years’ experience in mineral resources or a closely related field, or a comparable combination of education and professional experience.
    • Field experience with porphyry, skarn, epithermal, and/or sediment-hosted gold deposits.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in ArcGIS and general computer literacy.
    • Motivation to take on self-directed learning and to develop professional/technical skills.
    • Ability to work independently, communicate within a larger team structure, and maintain meticulous file/data management.

    Health Insurance- Public Employee Health Program (PEHP):

    Retirement- Utah Retirement Systems (URS):
    • Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems before 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
    • Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.
      • Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.  
    •  Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
    Paid Time Off:
    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
    • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
    • We have 12 paid holidays.

    • A professional geology license in the State of Utah is required, or the ability to acquire this license in the first year of employment (not applicable if the position is filled at the Geologist level).  Qualifications for licensure.
    • Risks that require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g.,  remote fieldwork in various weather conditions working around operating machines, excavation and construction site safety, etc.
    • The field work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, working year-round in varying/extreme weather conditions, etc.
    • Valid Driver's license.
