Job Summary
This is a summer position at Camp Heart O' Hills. This position summary should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the essential functions and requirements of this position. The Percussion Studio Coordinator position involves overseeing the Percussion Studio by formulating and implementing a well-balanced percussion curriculum that includes traditional and contemporary elements. This position is tasked with promoting a safe and stimulating learning environment for their students that facilitates personal, artistic, and spiritual growth. The Percussion Studio meets as its own class separate from the bands. The Percussion Studio Coordinator should focus on developing proper technique on a variety of instruments such as snare drum, bass drum, timpani, mallet percussion, cymbals, and auxiliary percussion. More advanced students should also receive instruction in drum set and Latin percussion. The curriculum should include standard percussion literature and methods, as well as excerpts from Salvation Army brass band pieces. Percussion students should also receive instruction the proper etiquette, setup, teardown, and basic operations necessary to an excellent percussion section. The goal is to produce excellent percussionists that read music, can play in Salvation Army brass bands, play in contemporary praise and worship bands, and can go on to pursue collegiate training in percussion if they should so choose.
The Percussion Studio Coordinator will ensure that students prepare two solos to be performed at a recital. One should be a mallet solo, and the other a battery solo (preferably snare drum or timpani). Solo preparation is done in lessons and the student's private practice, not during the percussion studio class time. In addition, a percussion ensemble should be prepared and performed on the final graduation ceremony. As the top brass band nears a performance, the Percussion Studio Coordinator must be prepared to assign two or three top percussionists to play with the brass band.
The Percussion Studio Coordinator is generally also required to teach a music theory class, give private lessons, and participate in a chorus. All staff, including the Percussion Studio Coordinator, are also on duty during staff meetings, Bible Studies, worship services, night programs, and Evensong. Other responsibilities include creating lesson plans, scheduling private lessons, grading assignments, monitoring student's progress, preparing students for recitals and performances, informing the Conservatory Director of any needed supplies or music, ensuring that the Conservatory equipment and instruments are well cared for, moving and setting up equipment as needed for rehearsals and performances, playing with staff ensembles, planning and implementing at least one night program, etc.
The Percussion Studio Coordinator should maintain proper behavior in their students, follow appropriate disciplinary guidelines when necessary, highlight positive behavior in students, promote the participation and safety of students at all times, provide guidance and role-modeling to students both personally and artistically, ensure punctuality and responsibility of students, ensure compliance with camp rules and regulations, assist with program activities as assigned by the Conservatory Director, maintain an up-to-date incident report log, report any issues or concerns to the Conservatory Director, ensure that proper coverage is maintained over students at all times, keep personal living quarters neat, clean and ready for inspection, be available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Conservatory Director, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development; Ability to ensure the safety of students and other staff; Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, and supervise children and youth programs and activities; Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth; Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff; Ability to plan, develop, and implement effective childhood and youth programs and activities; Knowledge of the principles and practices of music education; Ability to teach classes in a group setting; Ability to teach students music theory; Ability to teach and demonstrate your artistic discipline at a high level.
Education and Experience
One year of experience teaching and college credits in percussion, with the ability to play and teach lessons in a classroom setting involving more than one student preferred, OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications
CPR and First Aid Certified. Training will be provided at camp.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating and provide necessary instruction to students and staff; Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques; Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity; Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid; Must be able to assist students in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of students;
Ability to meet attendance requirements; Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.
Some physical requirements could include climbing, standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate activities are required. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Have a willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering a program in the facility available. The conservatory schedule operates 7 days a week, and all staff members are expected to be available for duty at all times unless otherwise noted by the Conservatory Director. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying environmental conditions.
Additional Information
Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/04/ /09/2024 and participation is required.
The 2024 summer camp program will be held 6/10/ /14/2024. If you are unable to work the entire program session, you must let us know on your application.
