Payroll Director directs all aspects of payroll processing operations. Establishes and oversees payroll processes and procedures for routine processing, tax reporting and internal financial requirements. Being a Payroll Director designs short-term and long-term strategies to achieve continuous improvement and efficiencies in payroll processing and delivery operations. Keeps stakeholders informed about the status of payroll laws and regulations and develops implementation plans for required changes to operations. Additionally, Payroll Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Payroll Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Payroll Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function. The Payroll Director will have the responsibility for timely and accurate processing of payroll checks for multiple locations and multiple states, within the organization.     This position is full-time, hybrid (3x a week) and permanent
     
    Responsibilities and Duties:
    • Full-cycle processing of bi-weekly payroll for 6,500 employees, multiple locations/states - currently 80 locations within CA, NV, UT, FL, TX, and AZ
    • Calculations for employee wages based on exempt and non-exempt positions. Including team members who earn pay based on piece-rate pay.
    • Ensuring overtime, double time, vacation, sick, holiday, meal breaks, etc. are paid accurately based on state and local requirements.
    • Ensure vacation and sick time accruals are accurate.
    • Process Garnishments/Liens according to court ordered instructions (with support of 3rd party vendor).
    • Investigate and resolve any pay issues/discrepancies and answer any questions regarding payroll.
    • Managing all aspects of the payroll process, such as approving transactions and reviewing exemptions.
    • Changing individual payrolls as required by management, such as tax deductions or salary adjustments.
    • Maintaining payroll systems and reporting any issues to management.
    • Supervising personnel involved in payroll (2 Payroll Accountants/Assistants) and ensuring the best financial practices are followed.
    • Auditing payroll transactions to ensure that accounts, payment dates, and taxes are accurate and up to date.
    • Creating monthly and annual payroll reports for management review.
    • Ensuring all payroll systems comply with federal tax laws.
    • Attending to any payroll-related queries or questions from employees/management.
    • Prepare reports for quarterly, yearly, and weekly reports for management.
    • Keeping up with state and local wage laws and ensure payroll practices are adjusted accordingly.
    • Working with department heads to update various types of pay for commissions and bonuses.
    • Supporting Gym-Managers/Management team with training of payroll process and expectations.
     
    Qualifications and Expectations:
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, human resource management, or a similar field is preferred.
    • At least three years' experience as a payroll director or payroll manager.
    • Prior experience managing payroll for multi-state companies.
    • Recent experience handling commissions, FLSA, Piece Rate Pay and state specific meal/rest break compliance.
    • Prior experience implementing various earnings codes.
    • Excellent knowledge of payroll software, ADP Workforce Now or ADP Workforce Manager a plus.
    • Familiarity with labor legislation and federal tax laws.
    • The ability to work ethically with employee-sensitive information.
    • Solid knowledge of data entry management.
    • Highly efficient multi-tasking adept at staying focused through many interruptions.
    • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
    • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with team members and provide a high-level of customer service.
    • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.
    • Assertive and able to reinforce policies and encourage self-sufficiency.
