Payroll Director directs all aspects of payroll processing operations. Establishes and oversees payroll processes and procedures for routine processing, tax reporting and internal financial requirements. Being a Payroll Director designs short-term and long-term strategies to achieve continuous improvement and efficiencies in payroll processing and delivery operations. Keeps stakeholders informed about the status of payroll laws and regulations and develops implementation plans for required changes to operations. Additionally, Payroll Director requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to senior management. The Payroll Director manages a departmental sub-function within a broader departmental function. Creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-function and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure. To be a Payroll Director typically requires 5+ years of managerial experience. Deep knowledge of the managed sub-function and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function.     Overview

                                                                                                                                                                     Job Summary

    The Director, Payroll and Retirement Services provides strategic and operational leadership for the payroll, payroll systems, and retirement services teams. Reporting to the VP, Controller, this role is a key member of the finance leadership team. This position partners with multiple areas of the business to design and implement payroll and retirement plan changes to ensure legal compliance and operational efficiency in all areas of responsibility.

     

     

    Typical Duties and Responsibilities:

     

    • Provide leadership to ensure accuracy and compliance of the company’s multi-state payroll, associated tax filings, accounting entries, reporting, and related tasks.
    • Provide leadership to ensure accuracy and compliance of the company’s ESOP, 401(k), and nonqualified deferred compensation plans in design, administration, reporting, accounting, and related tasks.
    • Design and drive execution of short-term and long-term strategies to achieve continuous improvement and efficiencies.
    • Maintain an advanced understanding of law related to payroll, employment, ESOP, and ERISA.
    • Interpret policies and statutes and make recommendations to stakeholders.
    • Keep up with industry trends and implement best practices.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert and partner with information technology, human resources, benefits, and other areas of the business to meet department and company goals.
    • Develop communication plans for payroll and retirement news and benefits.
    • Review reconciliation of general ledger accounts for accuracy.
    • Ensure internal and external audit requirements are fulfilled and support ESOP and 401(k) annual audits, including preparation of financial statements.
    • Provide and analyze data related to payroll and benefit metrics or forecasting.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with vendors needed to fulfill department objectives.
    • Perform all job duties and responsibilities with honesty and integrity.
    • Perform other duties as assigned or needed.

    Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree in a related discipline OR equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience

     

     

    Experience:

    • Minimum eight (8) years of relevant corporate experience or (5) years of experience with a public accounting firm, or a combination of both.
    • Experience managing or supervising a team (e.g. interviewing, scheduling, hiring, coaching, training, disciplining, etc.)
    • Strong analytical skills, financial aptitude, and attention to detail.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities at the same time.
    • Demonstrating expertise in interpreting and implementing policies, laws, rules, or regulations.
    • Demonstrating detailed knowledge, understanding and proficiency in accrual accounting, interpreting and analyzing financial information, and identifying problems.
    • Applying strong analytical and problem-solving skills with close attention to detail in order to effectively monitoring progress and complete assignments, performing all duties with efficiency and accuracy.
    • Demonstrating proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

     

    Ability to:

    • Synthesize and prioritize critical issues.
    • Motivate, train, and lead a team.
    • Organize assigned tasks to meet established schedules, timeliness, and/or deadlines.
    • Establish and maintain good working relationships across the organization.
    • Continuously learn and improve skills; be resilient, receptive and responsive to performance feedback.
    • Travel on an as needed basis.
    • Respond to calls on urgent matters involving affected functional area activities including after business hours, on weekends, and holidays.
