Patient Safety Specialist assists in the development and implementation of patient safety programs. Gathers data detailing patient-related errors and conducts analysis for management detailing the cause of the error. Being a Patient Safety Specialist recommends changes, policies, or programs that could prevent future errors. Gives presentations and training programs meant to increase awareness of patient safety initiatives. Additionally, Patient Safety Specialist tests patient-safety knowledge of employees and recommends changes to training programs. Requires a bachelor's degree. Typically reports to a manager or head of a unit/department. The Patient Safety Specialist contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project.   • Under minimal direction, the Clinical Risk Specialist (CRS) supports the effective surveillance, analysis, and prevention of events which may injure patients, lead to malpractice claims, and cause loss to the health care system. The CRS collaborates with multidisciplinary health care teams to promote high reliability principles, reduce and prevent adverse medical outcomes, minimize the risk of injury to patients, staff and visitors, and control any associated liability. The CRS will be involved in sentinel event investigations, safety event investigation and trend analysis, risk management program development, educational in- services and process improvement projects.

    Minimum Education & Work Experience

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Healthcare related field
    • Three (3) – (5) years of clinical experience 

    Required Licenses/Certifications

    • Valid, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Michigan.

    • Demonstrates project management and critical thinking skills, with the ability to lead / provoke the thinking of administrators and medical leaders by articulating opportunities and being a change agent for the organization.
    • Excellent interpersonal, diplomatic, negotiation and customer service skills with an ability to deal with conflict and people who are upset by provide a calming influence in difficult situations.
    • Ability to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error and support decision making using information technology; demonstrates analytical problem solving ability including the ability to perform statistical and trend analysis.

    • Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, electronic mail and internet navigation software.
      Improvement methodology, concepts, education and implementation
    • Multidisciplinary process improvement experience as a team leader or project facilitator at business unit or System level, and experience designing and implementing process improvements at the business unit or System level to facilitate compliance with Joint Commission, CMS and other regulatory bodies.
    • Good presentation skills including solid oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of personalities and departments, including members of the medical staff.
    • Meets or exceeds HFHS Team Member Standards of Excellence.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Related work experience with healthcare risk management with a focus on patient safety, risk management or quality improvement.
    • Experience and/or demonstrated understanding of root cause analysis and FMEA analysis.
    • Juris Doctorate (JD) with admittance to the Bar in the State of Michigan.
    • Master's Degree in healthcare related field.
