  • POSITION DESCRIPTION 

    The Safety Specialist works closely with the Director Safety and VP/GM in all aspects of ground safety within the organization. 

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):

    1. Responsible for the maintenance, advancement, and integration of the Safety Management System (SMS) within Cargo.

    2. Works with the Director of Safety to track, measure, analyze, and audit the development, performance, and improvement of policies and procedures for all cargo operations.

    3. Updates and interprets Safety policies and procedures as needed. 

    4. Provide support and assistance for Operations Safety Audits, in addition to developing internal audits as needed. 

    5. Coordinate activities of Cargo managers in evaluating safety program effectiveness, root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.

    6. Assumes safety management responsibilities in the absences of the Director of Safety.

    7. Conducts general safety training to employees.

    8. Assist the Director of Safety, as requested, with administering other safety programs as outlined in Company safety policies. 

    9. Develop and implement cargo safety programs and initiatives for Company personnel to assure a safe and healthful work environment.

    10. Advise and make recommendation to management of recognized hazards and unsafe/unhealthful working conditions through either the investigatory process or by evaluation.

    11. Periodically assess Cargo training and safety program effectiveness and compliance.

    12. Solicit and process safety improvement suggestions.

    13. Evaluate available training resources and advise management concerning training requirements, methods, and sources.

    14. Develop and maintain Cargo Operations training programs and materials to facilitate employee development.

    15. Develop and maintain Cargo Operations manuals.

    16. Introduce and disseminate new industry methods and procedures that enhance safety and productivity.

    17. Analyze training needs to develop new training programs or modify and improve existing programs.

    18. Is responsible for managing the company safety database (WBAT): hazard / incident reporting, injury reporting and the issuing initial risk assessments based on these reports.

    19. Performs, monitors, and records hazmat audits.

    20. Perform fit testing for Respiratory Protection Program.

    21. Assist the Director of Safety, as requested, with administering other safety programs as outlined in Company safety policies. 

    22. Reports irregularities, findings, concerns, and successes to the Director of Safety and affected department managers.

    23. Attends industry forums on Safety Management Systems and WBAT to keep up with the changing regulatory environment.

     

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or 3 years’ experience in training, safety management or related field or 2 years’ experience administering a Transportation SMS program. 

    • Intermediate Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

    • Must have excellent writing and speaking skills to properly communicate with regulatory agencies.

    • Knowledge and demonstrated competency with SMS, and its supporting principles is required. 

    • Knowledge and demonstrated competency of designing and implementing training programs and doctrine.

    • Requires the ability to evaluate options and confidently make independent decisions.

    • Ability to exercise independent discretion to make exceptions to established safety and Cargo policies and procedures when necessary.

    • Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance.

    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test, 5-year background check, 10-year criminal history check and security threat assessment.

    • Available to work various shifts, hours, and travel to other locations as needed, sometimes with short notice. 

    • Experience in interpreting and applying federal regulations.

    • Superior analytical and communication skills with the ability to negotiate and communicate effectively across job levels and departments.
