Pathology Assistant under the supervision of a pathologist assists with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Being a Pathology Assistant may record findings or sterilize equipment. Requires a bachelor's/master's degree from an accredited program. Additionally, Pathology Assistant may require certification as a pathologist assistant. Typically reports to a pathologist. To be a Pathology Assistant typically requires 2 to 4 years of related experience. Gains exposure to some of the complex tasks within the job function. Must perform medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses for the treatment, diagnosis and prevention of diseases. Conducts chemical examinations of body fluids to find the presence of abnormal and normal components. Communication skills are essential in order to greet patients and answer incoming phone calls. Must have a professional and friendly attitude, be organized and have the ability to follow directions while multi-tasking in high stress situations. Must be detail oriented to ensure that the correct patient information and results are being entered. Must be professional in appearance and have dependable transportation. Basic computer and typing skills are required along with knowledge of office equipment. Minimum high school diploma or GED as well as current certification as a Laboratory Assistant by the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners required. Two or more years of laboratory assistant experience preferred.
