Park Naturalist plans, develops, and conducts programs to inform the public of historical, natural, and scientific features concerning national, state, or local parks. May require a bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Being a Park Naturalist is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Summer Naturalist

  • The mission of the Cottonwood Canyons is to support the environment of the Cottonwood Canyons through stewardship and education. The Cottonwood Canyons Foundation’s Naturalists will work with CCF volunteers and the Forest Service to operate the Silver Lake Visitor Center and serve as interpretive naturalists at Alta in Albion Basin. This position is perfect for those with a passion for ecology, education, conservation, and for those who enjoy both working outdoors and working with the public. This is a full-time, seasonal position. Summer naturalists will work five eight-hour shifts each week which includes both weekend days (applicants must be able to work both Saturday and Sunday each week). This position begins May 20 and will conclude September 2. This position requires applicants to work on Memorial Day, July 4th, July 24th, and Labor Day (but Naturalists will be paid Holiday Pay for those days). This position includes 5 days of PTO for the season (10 hours/month).

    CCF summer naturalists will provide interpretive guide services to visitors at Silver Lake and the Brighton Basin trail network, and also in Albion Basin. Naturalists’ responsibilities will include working at the interpretive desk inside the Visitor Center, providing naturalist services to visitors of all ages, hosting guided nature tours, staffing and setting up biofact stations, assisting the Forest Service compliance crew at Silver Lake, and light trail maintenance. Audiences will range from young children to adults and may include school groups, families, and individual visitors of all abilities. Light cleaning duties include daily garbage pickup on trail, daily restroom maintenance, and daily cleaning of the visitor center. Naturalists will be responsible for collecting fees and selling items in the Visitor Center store.

    Summer naturalists will act as ambassadors for the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation, the US Forest Service, and the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. Interpretive naturalist training and curricula will be provided, and summer naturalists will have access to teaching aids including animal bones & tracks, pinned insects, etc. Summer naturalists will also have ample opportunities to explore the Brighton basin trail network. Training on educating the public regarding fees will be provided.

    Qualifications:

    ● Ideal candidates will have a background in biological or environmental science and a passion for education and interpretation.

    ● Candidates should enjoy communicating with an audience of visitors, and ideal candidates will be able to present educational information in an engaging and entertaining manner.

    ● Candidates must be punctual, responsible, and able to work autonomously, as well as in a team setting, including with volunteers, and Forest Service employees.

    ● Candidates should be prepared to work full shifts outdoors (in inclement weather) and be comfortable standing, walking, or hiking for long periods of time.

    ● Candidates should be able to hike and monitor moderate-difficult trails on a daily basis.

    ● Candidates must have personal transportation available and be able to reliably commute up Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

    ● The Cottonwood Canyons Foundation is a drug-free workplace. Candidates must be willing to submit to and pass a criminal background check and drug-screening.

    Employment Details:

    ● Summer naturalists will be required to work 40 hours per week, generally in five 8-hour shifts.

    Various schedules will be available to prospective hires, but all schedules will include both weekend days every week.

    ● Summer naturalists will accrue 10 hours PTO / month.

    ● Summer naturalists will be paid $17.50/hour.
