Paralegal Manager manages and develops the paralegal team and the systems and processes utilized to conduct research and produce legal documents. Responsible for case management by assigning cases and monitoring progress to ensure timely completion. Being a Paralegal Manager validates and oversees the preparation of legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, motions, appeals, wills, and contracts. Organizes documents into formal report and proofs for attorneys. Additionally, Paralegal Manager provides research and training support to the paralegals utilizing databases and legal libraries. Coordinates with attorneys on special requests or highly complex projects. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to a head of a unit/department. The Paralegal Manager manages subordinate staff in the day-to-day performance of their jobs. True first level manager. Ensures that project/department milestones/goals are met and adhering to approved budgets. Has full authority for personnel actions. To be a Paralegal Manager typically requires 5 years experience in the related area as an individual contributor. 1 - 3 years supervisory experience may be required. Appellate Defender Database Manager/Paralegal

    You must be a permanent full-time of permanent part-time or grant-funded Judicial Branch employee to be eligible for this position.  Contract and temporary employees are not eligible for consideration.

    The Office of the Appellate Defender seeks a qualified applicant to perform a variety of clerical, administrative, database management, and general legal tasks.

    Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Provide general administrative support for 21 attorneys.
    • Prepare the index and table of contents and authorities for appellate briefs using Microsoft Word.
    • Edit attorneys' briefs and file them using electronic filing site.
    • Answer phones and respond to questions from clients and the public.
    • Maintain and update case information in multiple sources to gather information necessary to maintain and update databases.
    • Perform basic legal research for pending appeals.
    • Enter data and extract data from Microsoft Access databases and Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
    • Other general support tasks as necessary.
    This position reports to the Appellate Defender.  Work hours are 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.  This is not a remote position, and the position requires daily in-person attendance at the office. Knowledge of:  office management practices and procedures; court system practices, forms, and procedures; and NC General Statutes applying to Public Defender's office to prepare legal documents and forms.

    Skills in:
      
    Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Adobe.

    Ability to:  communicate effectively; maintain cooperative working relationships with court officials, defendants, and the public; edit and prepare appellate briefs for filing; pay close attention to detail; locate and compile information from different sources for case files; and learn and apply laws to different situations. High school diploma and five (5) years of legal secretarial or administrative office management experience; or associate degree in Secretarial Science or a Certified Paralegal program and three (3) years of experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Management prefers candidates with a bachelor's degree and/or certification from an accredited paralegal program and at least five (5) years of legal experience, preferably related to criminal law.

    Candidates with Microsoft Access database and Adobe experience are strongly preferred.
