Being a Paralegal drafts and edits legal documents such as briefs, pleadings, motions, and contracts. Conducts fact-finding, data collection, and analysis used to prepare statements and arguments. Additionally, Paralegal assists attorneys with depositions, interviews, discovery, and investigations. Manages, organizes, and archives documents with software tools and technology. Applies specialized legal terminology appropriately in documents. Typically requires a bachelor's degree. Typically requires Paralegal Certification. Typically reports to an attorney. The Paralegal work is generally independent and collaborative in nature. Contributes to moderately complex aspects of a project. To be a Paralegal typically requires 4 -7 years of related experience.     This position is headquartered at our 201 W. Washington Avenue office and will have the option to work hybrid for up to 40%. This schedule may change based on training or operational needs. Employees need to report to the 201 W. Washington Ave. Madison, WI office on their first day for onboarding and orientation.

    Position Summary


    This position provides paralegal support to attorneys, and legal advice and service to agency officials concerning all DCF program areas. This position provides a full range of paralegal support such as conducting research, informing attorneys of findings, recommending appropriate courses of action. Subject areas of assistance may include child care regulations, rehabilitation review, child welfare, regulation and licensing of programs and facilities and assistance in other areas as needed.

    Salary Information


    The classification title for this position is Paralegal. The starting salary is between $20.24 and $30.42 per hour ($42,099 and $63,273 annually), depending on qualifications. Pay for current State of WI employees will be based on the compensation plan in effect at the time of the appointment. Pay for current state employees who are transferring will be determined based upon the pay on transfer rules (higher level duties or equity) as outlined in the compensation plan in effect at the time of appointment.

    The pay schedule/range is 07-04. A one-year probationary period may be required.

    Job Details


    Due to the nature of the position, final candidates may be required to allow DCF to conduct a security background check to determine whether the circumstances of any pending charges or convictions would be substantially related to the job being filled.

    Applicants must be legally entitled to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DCF sponsorship.) The Department of Children and Families does not sponsor visas, either at time of hire or at any later time.

    Qualifications


    Minimally qualified applicants will have:

    • Experience working with confidential and sensitive documents
    • Experience providing administrative support in a legal office setting (writing letters/correspondences, database management, managing a legal calendar, data entry, etc.)
    • Experience reviewing, analyzing, or investigating a legal case or investigation


    Well-qualified applicants will have:

    • Paralegal education certificate
    • Experience working with public records requests
    • Experience providing paralegal support to attorneys to gather facts, prepare documents, and general preparation for court and/or administrative proceedings
    • Experience drafting witness lists, exhibit lists, trial binders, subpoenas, motions and discovery
